3/8-10 taps?

Do they make a 3/8-10 tap (mcdermott pin)? I have been looking online and cant even find a drill/tap chart with that size on it. They do have 3/8-16 and given that the #16 is the TPI i know i can just use a 5/16 drill bit for my hole to tap, but where can i get the tap?

3/8-10 taps are not a standard size. There are a number of places who do stock them such as Atlas Billiard Supply. Other than that they are a special order from a tool company.

3/8-10 is a standard Acme size but it's very rare that you can find anyone that stocks one...... There is a company in the UK that does list them online

What are you using them for? No offense but it sounds like you have never tapped a hole before. If this is true, don't bother spinning your wheels trying to find a shop that has the custom tap, just get it from Atlas Billiard Supply.

It is incorrect that the hole diameter is the same for threads of the same major diameter but different pitch.

Happy tapping:)

I found a place to buy 3/8-10 taps for under $12 bucks a piece. The only problem being is they are only about 3" long and too short in length for what we use them for.

You answered both of my questions here so for that i say thank you lol. 1. You gave me a supplier in which i could buy what i was searching for. 2. hole sizes can change depending on the pitch of the threads. I have tapped holes before, but it is not something i have a "major" experience in, and normally im working with a more standard size. I try to make sure i work off a tap/die chart but the McDermott pin is one of the odd ball "huge" pins that is not on the normal list lol.

Thanks again everyone for the information it was a really big help. I now understand why this pin size is used by very, very few lol.

I'll assume that your statement was an attempt at sarcasm.
It did give me a grin.
Actually, the 3/8x10 is the most popular pin ever conceived for use in a cue.
But then I'll bet the shoe-lace had people baffled when it was first introduced.
Now that was sarcasm. Lol

Don't waste time or money on a 3/8-10 acme thread tap as they are like 29 degree included angle as opposed to the standard 60 used in most cues.

Somewhere there is a mathmatical formula for calculating what the minor diameter (drill diameter) should be for a given thread diameter/pitch. Probably in the Machinist's Handbook. I had it once before. The minor diameter for a 3/8-10 should be between .267 and .288. Since you are tapping wood and will never get full thread depth, try closer to the .288. Try it on test dowels first and get it the best you can before ruining the shaft or butt you are working on.
