Bought a very nice sneaky Pete w/ a 3/8/10 pin but my other 3/8/10 carbon shafts only screw down half way and become to tight to continue, so I took it off. But the shaft it came with screws just fine on my other 3/8 x 10 McD butts. Comments???

3/8 by 10 pins have some variation. Early Joss 3/8 by 10 pins, slightly larger threads than later ones. 80s McDermotts, also a little on the big side.

Take it to a cue repairman and have him run a tap into the shaft to get a good fit.

By the way, the same variations happen with the 14 thread pins as well.

For the most part modified shafts fit both, standard 3/8x10 shafts mostly not. Some 3/8x10 shafts will fit modified but that's not a sure thing. My DZ 3/8x10 shaft fits my McDermott cues, my McDermott Shafts don't begin to fit my DZ cue.

I bought a CueDesg shaft, which fits on my McDermott, and I wanted to put it on a Mueller sneaky Pete, with the pins look exactly alike, but it doesn’t fit on the sneaky Pete, butt.
If the Mueller pin is longer, then this might be the issue and the shaft need to be tapped deeper. But it may also be a width issue as there are some deviation of the standard. This could also be fixed by tapping it.
Some cue makers make the thread tighter than others.
I have similar issues with 3/8x10 joints and with 5/16x14 joints.
Usually the top brands make the thread loose enough to fit all joints.
CueTec have regular 3/8x10 and a flat / modified version, the latter fits all.

The 2 pins are the same length. It does screw on firm in the beginning but then half may down it’s to tight to continue.
If I have this retapped to accommodate my new butt won’t it then be to loose for my old butt? I want to use it on both. 🤔

I've had this happen with visually identical 3/8x10 modified pins.

If you retap it, yes it will be looser on the pin it originally fit on. However, you should only need to tap it a tiny amount, and in my case the result was perfect for both butts.

If there is a Harbor Freight near you, they have a digital caliper which is very inexpensive.

If you buy one you can measure the major and minor thread of your pins and see exactly what is going on.
Granted there might be a wee bit off but you’ll have a clear picture as to the differing sizes.

I have had one for fifteen years and it works great.
Just a thought!

I bought a 5/16x18 CF shaft for my vintage Adam from my local custom cue maker.

Last year I commissioned a custom butt from the same cue maker. The same CF shaft would barely screw onto the custom butt; it was extremely tight.

He tapped the shaft joint and now it easily screws onto both butts without it being too loose on the Adam.

do your CF shafts have an insert into the shaft where it screws into the joint pin? The insert may be too short or may not be tapped exactly as your joint pin is configured.

Not all shafts and pins are created equal. Some variances in the threads and depths exist.
