3/8 x 10 tap question.

Mac,

Something is amiss here. You should be able to tap Maple all day with that tap.
What size is your tap-drill ?
I just read your last post and it sounds like you're NOT tap-drilling.
If that's the case that's also the problem.
Your choice, buy a lot of taps or pre-drill.

KJ

Thank you so much, this is exactly why I asked here. You guys have answers.
It looks like that tap requires a larger hole but that does not matter for my purpose. I will give them a call in the morning.
Thanks again.
Just to follow up on my post I got the new taps a few days ago. They are not bad but for working on cues they may have some drawbacks. They are short (see picture) It would not be a big problem to grind down the shank a bit so you could tap deeper.

You could also grind down the tips to make it into a bottoming tap. I can see them being of use in the shop and at 1/4 the price others ask not a bad buy.

I did some testing and the screw threaded in quite easily.
I think maybe a little loose for tapping the hole for setting the butt screw. I want the butt screw to be a tighter fit. The company also sells 5/16 x 14 but I have not seen one in person. For the price they are worth having around.

They would be good for making joint protectors or shaft tapping if you can not do it any other way. For the cheap price you don't feel bad grinding them to modify them for special uses.

Thats about it, they are working perfectly for what I am using the for so I am very glad I started this thread and discovered this new, at least to me, source for tools.

I use a phenolic insert in my shafts. I drill them with a 5/16 ..... 3 flute solid carbide drill.

I put the tap in the tail stock.

I tap them 3/8-10 about 1/2 way. Then I back out the tap and blow out the hole. Then I finish tapping the hole to depth. If I tap it again the thread will feel loose, so I don't .

I do not power tap..... I spin the chuck by hand. That way you can feel if the chips are binding the tap.

Don't you have an extra 30 seconds in your day to hand tap??

I have never broken a tap.

Have you checked to see if you are bottoming out in the hole??

Have you actually read any of my posts before responding?
