Went to the pool hall & took my new Mcdermott out of its case. This guy comes over & says " nice cue". He then eyes the joint & says " that joint will wear out on you in a few years ". Anyone ever see these joints wear out? I think he was full of it myself! :D

There is no such pin as a 3/8x10 Radial.
It's either one or the other, 3/8x10 or Radial.
Since McD doesn't use the Radial, we'll go on the assumption that it's a 3/8x10.

There are many 3/8x10 pin McD cues out there that are at least 20yrs. old and still in fine shape. It depends on how well the cue is cared for.
Abuse the cue and it won't last a week. Take care of your equipment and it can potentially last a lifetime.

It will last

As long as you do not allow a gorilla to tighten it. I have a McDermott with wood shaft threads that I have played with for 20 yrs now and it is still fine. BUT, nothing is foolproof if some Fool wants to prove a point.
I have seen the threads in brass inserts hold up fine to overtightening, but the insert was ripped out of the shaft by the abusive gorilla. Did not damage the threads in the insert, but destroyed the shaft !

I thought these were called Radial Pins but, you are correct as it is 3/8x10 pin. Thanks!

cut shot -- It is unlikely you will ever wear out the threads in your McDermott shaft. But if it ever does become too sloppy of a fit, you can have the shaft plugged, then re-drilled and re-tapped. Then it will be good for several more decades.

> Maybe it was easier in the early days, but I can tell you this.

I recently looked at 2 brand-new McD's,and not real high-end either, and the joints on these were tapped QUITE snug. Maybe whoever actually did it was having a particularly good day,but those 2 cues practically squeaked during the last couple turns. Not from being done wrong either, just that tight. The pins seemed particularly nice as far as cosmetic surface finish.

The owner of one asked me if there was any way to fix that, and I had to explain to her "no you want it that snug,it will get smoother...".

I don't see it getting loose any time soon. Tommy D.
