3 Cushion Break Shots

I've diagrammed the two shots you mentioned, the one Mark described from the guy at Tiff's, as well as six more crazies...

Robert,

Yes, diagram 3 is the way I remember it. On slick cloth one must come quite close to the second object ball the first time by.

Diagram 5 is a Roberto Rojas specialty.

Thanks.

Mark

I used to play a lot at Tif's in the 70"s. To answer Dave's question, if the person who played the umbrella break shot was Filipino, it may have been
Andy. I don't remember seeing him do it, but he may still have been the one.

Speaking of crazy break shots, I diagrammed a few more here:

6 Guaranteed Ways to Lose the Opening Break Advantage

Good thing I don't live in Europe. :)

Reading this post again made me go out and plot 9 more ways to do an opening shot while shooting off your opponent's ball first

If you have more shots, please post the layout urls as replies to the post above. CueTable Library will automatically process the info and transform them into graphics.

Wei,

Those are certainly interesting shots, but unfortunately, for the break shot, the UMB says: "The starting cannon must be played by direct attack on the red ball."

This raises the question of the legality of playing the break shot cushion first (before contacting the red). Any opinions?

Mark

You are absolutely right. You must play off the red and you must hit the red directly. Anything that happens after that is OK. So, you can play a long angle off the red and drop it in for the score, but no umbrella shots.

I agree with Jim that by that rule you must play directly to red, but I'm not sure that such a strict rule is needed. I would change it to: "The opening shot may not be played directly on the opponent's cue ball." Of course, you could argue that it is a mockery to play a shot other than directly on red.

After looking at the diagrams I original posted and Raiford diagrams. I wonder where do Azer member - prefer to aim on the cueball and what percent of the red ball do you hit?

I like to aim for 4/5 of the red ball. I use about 1/2 tip of right english HIGH ball. I hit the ball firmly, but not too hard. With a little bit of deflection, the red gets struck about 2/3 full. On a shorter table, I simply use 1 full tip of high right english. If the table is very short, 2 tips of High right english. Follow through on the stroke. If the table is very long, it is a very difficult shot. Sometimes even the pro's will miss it. In that case, I use my original formula and increase the speed slightly, opting to simply make the break shot and not worry too much about position.
