3 Cushion Handicapped Tournament

I agree with EZE123. No reason a tournament can't be completed in a weekend. The USBA needs to experiment with different formats and accommadate players that don't have the luxury of taking off time from work.

Yes, I understand that many of the members like the current format. Some people feel the current round robin three day format goes on too long, it's been voiced here before other than me, they'd like two days on a weekend as opposed to having to take a day off for the meeting the night before, play all day and into the night Friday, the whole weekend, and possibly another one on Monday, depending on where you live, I mean leaving and driving home and etc. 3 days of play can equal 1 or 2 days out of work if you don't live close. We'll agree to disagree. I was being sarcastic but I see what you're saying. My point is when I see a 48 player tournament, an almost 50 player 3-cushion tournament in the US, last only two days, and I see 9-ball tournaments with 50 players that go for two days, happens all the time, and nobody feels cheated. I'm just asking, does a 10-25 player billiards tournament really need to go three full days? There's absolutely no way to nip a few points off here and there? Maybe limit the number of innings, I like that idea - if a match goes over an hour, say, high score wins - time limit per match, etc. There's no possible way 20 players can have a good tournament in 12 hours times 2 days = a full 24 hours of play? Just a question.

Of course it can be done. The question is this:

If we shortened the format and time, etc, how many players would actually show up? That's what we would need to find out.

Here's my suggestion, and I note on the USBA site that round robin might not be the "official" USBA format, but there is a "Running a USBA tournament" doc on the site, and it's only geared towards round robins, and it seems to based on the 'how many matches can you cram into X number of days format', 8 or 12 hours a day? ie. "Formats based on Maximum Number of Matches"

and there is a handy time reference bit:
Average Time per game for “C” Players:
15 points: 1 hour
20 points: 1 hour 20 minutes
25 points: 1 hour 40 minutes
30 points: 2 hours
35 points: 2 hour 20 minutes
40 points: 2 hours 40 minutes
45 points: 3 hours
50 points: 3 hours 20 minutes

although I think in reality with bathroom breaks and such it's a little optimistic. There is a bit in there that I think addresses your concerns, Jim: "Better players do not like to play short matches and prefer more points per match. The lesser player has a better chance of winning if the games are short. It is OK to give the lesser players a chance, but you can’t overdo it,otherwise you will find many tournament players will not show up anymore."

So here's my suggestion and you can blame me for it, but my idea is, obviously, you don't try this in a regional match with few players, you don't do this in a handicapped match with A thru C players, I can see why the As wouldn't bother. But say at Carom Cafe, you have pure 'C' level matches. Everybody is basically the same level, everybody pays the same entry. Nobody really expects to win, they just want to play a tournament. There's no huge pot to play for, and most of the players just want to do a tournament, like say a 9-ball tournament in a pool hall - you chuck your money in a hat and play. I'm not suggesting the A tournaments change or even the B levels, but the casual player at the C level might like to play a tournament if it doesn't mean taking a day or two off work and paying $200 for a hotel, and playing 3 full days for 8-12 hours.
I go back to this alot, but go into a pool hall and talk to some basic level players and ask them if they'd like to play a tournament, and they'll say yes, and probably have. Then tell them they have to show up at 8 the night before, and then start at ten on friday morning, and it will go all day until Sunday, if they make the prelims. Most will not show up because they have a job, wife, kids, and they just want to play and not make a career of it. There is no reason C level players need to be playing hundreds of innings for three days. Try a C tournament in a place with alot of players, like Carom Cafe, make it Saturday-Sunday 10-5 o'clock double elimination, pay in some dollar amount, winner take all, nobody cares about averages, if you win, you win.

That's fine, but then what is the difference between your suggestion and a normal local handicapped tournament that lots of rooms have on a weekly or monthly basis?

Why would your suggestion be any different and what would be the attraction?
