Hi all
Just wondering if anyone had a good link or first hand info on billiards in the kunsan city area of s. korea I'm currently stationed here till december. I found some small little billiard halls but i was maybe looking for a tournament or something a little more competitive.

Don't know, but I'd love to be in South Korea now. Learn a little hangul & ask around. Someone will point you in the right direction. Korean food & 3 cushion, my idea of heaven. :)

Copy and paste this somewhere -- it might help:

Do they have tournaments: 그(것)들에는 경기 대회가 있는가?

Do they have leagues: 그(것)들에는 리그가 있는가?

Do they have billiard instructors: 그(것)들에는 당구 교사가 있는가?

I want to shoot with the top players: 나는 최고 선수와 쏘고 싶다.

When: 언제?

What time: 몇시에?

Where is a billiard supply store: 당구 공급 상점은 어디에 있는가?

Thanks:

My "Yankee-Hangul" is not absolutely perfect but it should be good enough to get the answers you may seek.

I was in the American Embassy there (1979 - 1987) and got free pool time in exchange for practical english conversation. Private english lessons are not cheap there and you will find numerous people who will be more then willing to pay for your pool time just for the opportunity to speak practical english with you. The best of two worlds. The bonus is, once you become friends, they will take you places tourists never go, buy you dinner, and you will never have to worry about not having a drink in front of you!

Of course there is always MWR/Officer's Club/NCO Club.

I hope this has been of some help! Best of luck/fortune to you (당신에게 운의 베스트)!

Very helpful answer.

Somebody should definitely make this a sticky, as it can help someone looking for carom tables anywhere in the world. I've found Korean billiards rooms everywhere from New Zealand to Latin America.

We can also expand it to include Spanish and Vietnamese.

wow thanks, I've played a couple of times here, once up near osan air base and i came from a pool backround but i have a good understanding of the diamond system and consider myself a good kicker, so me and my buddy who couldn't really play other than drunk 8 ball go to a billiard club. After about 30 mins of watching the clerk came over and very generously offered some advice along with one of the regulars, within an hour or two i was running 3 and a high of 4 points. At the end i went to pay and he discounted my table time by about five thousand won it was a nice gesture so i gave the extra five thousand to the regular as a fee for lessons and i know that anytime i go back there i will have someone to play and learn from it was a great experience. btw don't tip in korea they don't do that here lol

Awesome. Sounds like you're well on your way to becoming even more addicted to the game. I basically had the same experience as you did in a place where I was new and people took me in, and I have loved caroms ever since. Pool is great, but there's just something about the guys that place carom games that sets it apart.

And threes and fours are fantastic for just starting out in three cushion. Keep it up.

If anyone is looking for info on korean 4 ball i got the goods even played against some koreans the other day lol i saw a thread about some one asking about it.

Tipping is not required nor expected in Korea, but in Korea most high end hotels and resteraunts add on 10 percent compulsory service charge to bills. It is advisable to not argue over this fee. You can barter in the markets for lower prices, but make sure you do so politely.

I see you added I want to shoot with the top players: 나는 최고 선수와 쏘고 싶다. to your signature element -- nice touch.

Being in the military (I am retired Air Force) one never knows "where they are going to rack next!" Spanish: Quiero jugar billares con los mejores jugadores; German: Ich m?chte Billard mit den besten Spielern spielen; Italian: Vorrei giocare Billard con i migliori giocatori; Japanese:

I wish you well and if you gain a friend in Korea, it will be a friend for life.

Do they have 3-cushion tables: 그(것)들에는 3 방석 테이블이 있는가?

As a Korean...I would rather use the English word "cushion" instead of "방석" which actually means "pillow" :) Just say 3-cushion (3 쿠션)

Where is a pool hall: 공동 이용 강당은 어디에 있는가?
...also sounds very weird. "당구장 어디에 있습니까?"
"당구장" being the correct translation for pool/billiard hall.

I want to shoot with the top players: 나는 최고 선수와 쏘고 싶다.
...you don't use the word "쏘고" in billiards. "치고" would be the correct expression. You can use "쏘고" if you shoot with a rifle, gun etc.

Thanks for clearing that all up. I would have bounced that off my wife (she's Korean) before sending; but, she is a couple hours away right now. I figured "something" was better then "nothing" and the sooner he found a place to play the better. As I said earlier, "My "Yankee-Hangul" is not absolutely perfect..." Now, how do we translate "Pool Hall Lingo" --
