3 things you would change about pool

if you go with that proposed change, sketch and all, to any table manufacturer, what do you think the response will be?
I don't care. It's simple enough to do. If I was in the market I'd do it myself. The question was what would I change. That's it. I already like the rest of the existing equipment.

1. Put all the bar boxes into a mountainous sized pile and set them ablaze, never to return.
2. Return the rules of all disciplines to their original set. The ridiculous and constant changing of RULES in the last 25 years and calling it “format” changes is ludicrous.
3. Make 14:1 the game that defines what a champion is again. If it’s not appealing to the average dullard with the attention span of a gnat then that’s on them, let them gravitate to corn hole or something.

1. Ban jump cues
2. Use bar box tables as heating fuel
3. All safes must be called, or your opponent gets the option of making you shoot again. One "two way" shot allowed per rack.

Folks, too many of you live in some sort of pool-crazed fantasy land. Just deal with 'what is' today and you'd be better off. I'm bowing out of this with three things: 1.bar-boxes are never going away, 2. 14.1 is never making a comeback. and 3.FargoRate is here to stay. Deal with it.

Lot of bad ideas here. Glad all you guys aren't in charge of pool. Sorry! ;)

WNT has discussed the possibility of a limit on how many times a jump cue can be used. I would gather MR has discussed that.

MR also knows the shot clock is vital. Still surprised a better solution hasn't been put in place for non-TV table matches. Watched Tyler Styer last night and he is a sloooooow player without a clock. Good match, but way too long.

It's fine the way it is. After decades of everyone complaining about pool not going anywhere, we're riding the crest of a wave. The current formats, commentators, rule variations, etc., may not be ideal for us hard cores, but cumulatively may serve to bring new fans and players to the sport. Far as I can tell, somebody's doing something right.

1 - Make all new cloth play like broken in cloth. Very few people enjoy the first week of new cloth and it's really a different game

2 - Alternate break for everything. To come in line with all major sports, closer matches, increase fairness and to reduce overall importance of the break shot and reward overall ability more

3 - 4 inch pockets as maximum size for all professional play and 4.5 standard for amateur. Misses create pressure and excitement

Honorable mention to using chess clocks to manage match times and slow play. Ie each player starts with 30 mins and add 30 secs every time the players swap chairs. Better than a shot clock and can be run without a ref

What about your 3?
If anything I would say with alternate break the break is even more important, it puts you in a spot where you must have a good break so you win on all of your breaks, lose one game because you don't make a ball or foul and it becomes very hard to catch up.

Careful what you wish for. The fact that we can turn on one of ESPN's one million channels and find cornhole but not pool doesn't seem right. And as much as I love straight pool and one hole, we're never going to see it on TV because peoples' attention spans aren't long enough. Doing this would be like pulling the plug on a sport that's already on life support. If we're ever going to see the game we love grow and thrive it's going to have to be in a way that's faster paced than either of those games. I hate it but that's the reality. Adapt or die.

most people out side of the pool community dont even know what 14.1 or one pocket is...

I've always said the only way anyone will ever watch pool on main TV is 8 ball on a bar box because they can actully follow along wtf is going on...

My wife will watch pool with me occasionally, she can tolerate 8 ball...but 9 ball with the tv color set balls and she has no idea whats going on

Ban the jump shot/cue entirely.
No more pink or brown pool balls, the 5 is Orange, 7 is MAROON 4 is Moby Grape purple
Tournament GREEN cloth only
Shot clock of no longer than 25 seconds with 3 extensions PER MATCH not one for every inning
Alternate breaks, the break box and 4 inch pockets on pro events are fine.

How many in the pool community have to ask “ what game are you playing?” If they see a one pocket game? Many. But it’s good to introduce them to it.

I’ve had to adjust my attitude about some stuff. Not just in pool but in other areas of life. I tend toward curmudgeonly traditionalism in various things. It is generally unrealistic and leads to disappointment. So yes, you can set up your pool utopia in your basement and play 14.1 alone. Or you can go play in the real world. Playing in the real world offers more opportunities for competition and, yes, fun.

And Minnesota Fats was correct that straight pool was dead by the ‘50’s or ‘60’s. That was 60-75 years ago.
