314 shaft, ferrule, tip?

Ok Steve...results of the test are that the 314 plays wonderful. Downside is the plastic ferrule that absorbs chalk and melts with use. The Tiger X has a much better "hit" but for me I like the longer taper of the 314. In fact it seems to me that the 314 makes use of inside english much easier than any 1pc shaft. But thats my opinion. Why do you want to bash me for trying some new technology. Not that I owe you any expanation but my new cue I'm building will have my 1pc shafts.
No jab intended on Kelly Fisher & Val Finnie, very nice ladies, I enjoy doing work for them....they are pro players who use 314's on their cues...why don't you ask them why they use 314's instead of Fury shafts.
As far as Wayne...I made a positive comment on how his work must of improved. I too easily remember the cues he had in the display at the Smokin' Cue...5 cues for sale and not a single one of them had collars on the shaft that matched the collars under the steel joint. Even different colors with no matching ringwork. I asked about this thinking maybe they were the wrong shafts but was informed they were the correct shafts that Wayne made for each cue...no idea why they didn't match. A guy brought me one to make a shaft to match the butt...upon inspecting the original shaft it measured like 13.45mm at the top of the ferrule and 3 inches below the ferrule it measured 12.95mm...and this was a new & unchalked shaft. I've met Wayne and he's indeed a nice guy, I liked the looks of his new cue you posted...I just hope for his sake and for the people that purchase, that he's improved some things.
As for cutting 1pc house cues in half...I've done hundreds. Most all cuemakers use quality house cues as the butt section for a sneaky. Tim Scruggs used Valley's for years. Nothing wrong with doing that, putting in a joint and making a shaft for it. Thats what a "custom" sneaky is. I tried using your Sterling brand, but 75% had the metal weight not centered and it wobbled horribly as you rolled them. I have better sources now. If you have any more questions concerning my business why don't you drive down to Rack Em tonight...you are going to bump into me in person sooner or later. You should be very wary of trying to bash someone's business when you live in the same town as them!!! Real smart move!
Let me ask you how you claim to be a pool teacher. You know as well as I do your game is a joke. Last I remember you were an APA skill level 5 at best...and that was questionable. I remember everyone at Mothers laughing at you trying to give lessons. I'm no good player either but at least I'm an APA 7. Why don't you tell everyone how James Brown owner of a past local room...threw you out for doing horrible cue work. And a couple of other places too. I even had to fix one of the pros cues from team Fury...after you absolutely butchered it trying to simply put on a tip.
Sad when the people you work for have to call me to fix what you've destroyed because one of team Fury was about to leave for a tourney and couldn't use her shaft.
Hope to see you soon...

Kevin,
Thank you for showing your true colors. I asked you a simple question...why would you prefer a production shaft over one you made yourself. You got all defensive, and when I tried to clarify it further, you went off even more.
As for being a joke in this town...well...you are entitled to your opinion. I have a long list of very satisfied students. I'm not trying to get into any pi$$ing contest with you, personally, I don't care what you think of me. I asked a question...and had to go through all this BS before you gave me a straight answer.
Thank you.

Exactly how much end mass do you think a 3/4in aegis ferrule drilled 5/16 completely through with a 2in maple tenon adds? I just weighed them...they weigh...are you paying attention...0.1oz. Thats not adding ANY end mass!!! Next time question someone else's competence. Its called an upgrade, that actually hits better, without the problem of the factory ferrule MELTING into a cone.
Thank you for your calculations regarding the weight of the ferrules.

Let me throw more numbers at you. Let us consider the FRONT END MASS of a cue.

The front end mass would be the mass of the ferrule + tip + front 1-2 inches of wood. Calculating out based on a 19oz cue, the front end mass would be approximately 0.5oz - 0.6oz (possibly much less).

A small change of 0.1oz would basically increase the front end mass by 20%. A whooping TWENTY PERCENT.

There is where you get your added mass. Do you actually think Predator uses shorter ferrules for kicks?

The bottom line is, a slight increase in weight in the front part of the shaft will increase the deflection. iusedtoberich's experience with a modified 314 ferrule merely confirms that theory.

I have been using Predator shafts for almost a year, and I have no problem with ferrule staining (proper cleaning once in a while is all that is required). And I really have no clue what you're talking about melting ferrules... is the pool hall you play at air conditioned?

Maybe I'm just crabby today, but this doesn't sit well with me.

I think Mr. Varney is extremely knowledgeable, and from what I hear makes a great cue. But his egotism and elitist attitude doesn't seem to sit well with alot of people it seems. I've been to many forums with alot of custom cuemakers and have spoken with quite a few as well, and I've never seen anyone treat potential customers the way he does.

OK here we go:

bruin70...I agree Aegis is very hard. But you can no longer buy Grice. The solution is to have the tenon come completely through the ferrule and not use the capped version (if you want a softer hit anyway).

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.

but even with tenon through, doesn't that still take away the whole point of the forgiving ferrule.

Kevin,
I didn't bash your business..I asked one simple question...
Now you say I shouldn't bash someone's business, and what do you do in the same thread? I don't "claim" to be a teacher...I am a certified instructor. As for my game...you don't know what you are talking about. Your information is incorrect. And you know nothing about my business dealings with any of the pool rooms in town. Why would you suggest this crap in a public forum? Aren't you doing exactly what you accuse me of doing?

I was going to let this thread die. I suggest you do the same. You know & I know that what I said about you is the truth. You did more than ask a simple question. Your post is there for everyone to read. If you really want me to continue...then I'll tell all I know about your work & pool lessons...do you really want that? I didn't think so. I have several local people here who have agreed to get on here under there real names and tell what they know from dealing with you as well. You made no friends destroying lot of peoples cues with your cue work at J. Reginalds, Empire, etc. Like I said...I suggest you let this thread die. I'll be glad to come discuss this with you in person if you'd prefer. I do look forward to seeing you soon.
Kevin Varney
As for all the people out there who now are getting a horrible impression of me...I apologize. This is a personal issue between Steve & I...and should not be hashed out in this fine forum. I speak the truth and don't sugar coat it...again I'm sorry if my less than polite manner doesn't sit well with some.
