I have an old one exactly as you describe and the cue and shatfs fit very snugly.The separators do go all the way down.
I have no hesitation with putting any cue in it.I have a beautiful Sugartree in mine and feel it is very well protected.
Go for it. They are a great case

Mine is old and beat up but still perfectly functional.
If I were to sell it I would just get another.
 
Georges are great cases, but if you should be careful with the ones that have the fellini latch. One of the ones I had was really cool due to the unique pocket at the bottom, but you couldn't pick it up by the lid, or the lid would detach. I have a Mcdermott Mac case that locks up much better, plus the tube is aluminum.

Cause the 1x2's are hard to find with the pocket. And I'm too impatient to order one and wait for it.
