4 jaw steady rest

got a taig style lathe about month ago , today i was trying to face something and it kept leaving a slight dome on surface took the work piece out and looked at the chuck, grabed ahold of it and it had some play in at around the bearing is this causing the dome problem and is this common????really surprised being it not even a month old

Sounds like you don't have the shaft tight enough and when you are trying to face the shaft flat the shaft is walking backwards out of the chuck.

Most likely cause is either the carriage has moved away from the workpiece or the less likely, is the work piece has moved.
Locking the carriage so it can not move is easy, there is usually a center screw with a wing nut type on it.The other ones that require an allen key are for the gib adjustment.
 
When doing a facing operation on the end of a pool cue you start your cut from the center going outwards according to Joe Barringers video.

This is called a pealing cut
 
One of 2 reasons why you have this problem as stated earlier either you didnt tighten the headstock down enough and your work ---walked or you have dull tooling................I would venture to guess its number one--lose work.------
 
If you have left right play at the chuck you need to tighten the nut that is between your pulley and the left side of the headstock a little. That will increase the pre-load and should solve your problem.

Judging by the title and description, you are chucking up on the joint end and using the 4 jaw chuck steady rest on the tip/ferrule end. Correct?
If so, and your getting the doming issue as you described, your 4 jaw chuck installed in the steady rest, the bearing has too much play and should be returned to whomever you bought it from....IMHO. A steady rest is exactly as the name implies... 'STEADY' if there is end play, then it's not a STEADY rest. Could be a bad bearing, low quality bearing, etc.... contact the maker and have them set it right.
Buying from actual cuemakers that make repair lathes, etc... is the best thing to do. Buying from people that claim it will do the job but aren't actually in the business....well....

On a Taig I would never face off using your steady rest. What it sounds like you need to upgrade to a large boar head stock. Then use you steady rest for what it's made for after you head stock for support. You could also look up Joey a member on AZ and get his dead nuts jig.
