Does anybody out there have the capacity to turn a hard rock maple shaft that needs to be 42" long. I am looking to service one of my snooker clients who wants a 9 ball shaft for his John Paris 3/4 cue. Needs to have a european taper, with 1 inch at the joint end, and 12mm at the tip end.
Please pm price or suggestions.

Thanks
Walter:) :o

Hi Walter,
Here's one of the problems I see right out of the box. A lot of C/Ms aren't going to be able to help you, a few might. Most all of the shafts we make are in the 27" to 30"+ range and that's the length of dowels and/or semi-finished shafts we buy. Then you have the aging process to get the wood stable and on a 42" shaft, I see that as being awhile. For most of us, the machinery we have is capable of doing just over 30" and not much more. There are however, one or two C/Ms that come by here occasionally, that I suspect have the machines to handle your request. Be patient.

PS. Might I suggest an extension in the middle of the cue, making it a 3 pc.

Good suggestion!!

Very good suggestion!!

Easy enough, if he's not too particular. Cut a house cue at 42" from tip & do appropriate joint work, shave down to one inch & clean everything up. Not fancy, not perfect, but playable & fast & inexpensive. I'd imagine any newbie builder would love the challenge & would do a fine job. There's only a dozen of them on this site so it should be easy enough to find the right guy.

The trick is going to be the joint, which I assume is brass with metric threads. Still nothing too difficult. Just a suggestion. Good luck

Also a good suggestion. However, somewhere in the process the builder is going to need to turn the shaft btwn. cntrs. The joint end may need to be turned to size and pinned or inserted, no biggie, but then the entire shaft will need to be sanded, fully exposed to get the taper correct.

Yeah, qbilder has a good option, I just can't turn 42" btwn. cntrs.
Murray, you out there ?

Yeah, 42" is very long, but for most newbies equipped with cuemaking lathes can handle it. The Deluxe Cuesmith and the Model-B porper I think are both capable of 42" between centers. This is one of the fewer advantages a cuemaking lathe has over common cuemaking metal lathes.

Correction, the Model-B is not capable of 42", but the Deluxe can be with very little effort.

True the deluxe has a 6ft total bed, but where My motor & headstock is mounted I'd be lucky to get 41" between centers, and that's with the tail stock hanging over the end of the bed. I'd have to remount the motor back a hair, and reposition the headstock. It could be done though If someone wanted to go through that trouble, or already has their headstock mounted back a little bit further. The taper bars are only 36" long, but the joints could be matched, and the shaft could be hand tapered, that is if someone didn't want to mess with making two separate taper setups, and attempt to blend them. If a straight taper was used then the tail stock could be offset I suppose.

surely a bed extension on the deluxe will work, as he wants a euro taper this is conicle so offset the tail stock, i would prefer the 3 piece answer as you can use a top quality shaft blank
