The side pocket openings are usually made 1/2" wider than the corner pocket opening.
On a table with 4" corners, pocketing the OB in the 4 1/2" sides becomes very difficult.
If the OB pocketing line runs from the short rail center diamond into either side pocket
the OB either clips the near side tit, or will bounce off the far side. (instead of pocketing)
On this pocketing line balls can only be pocketed in the sides on extremely slow shots.
4 1/2" corners and 5" sides are the perfect size for the 9' tables.
If all the corners are made tighter, should the sides stay at 5"?
