526 High Run Straight Pool

Yes, the nod does go to DeOro!

DeOro was a champion in two different disciplines. He won 16 Pocket Billiards championships and 10 3 Cushion championships.

Mosconi won 15 Pocket Billiards championships.

DeOro was in a class by himself.

Thanks for bringing this up Bob!:)

D'Oro was in a class by himself! He was also a Junior National Champion too! BTW, thanks for posting the copy of Mosconi's affidavit from the East High Billiard Club. I saw that on the wall, in a frame, when I visited that pool room about 10 yrs ago! Neat historical item, to be sure!

So the nod goes to Alfredo de Oro? :D
Just out of curiosity, how good was his competition? I know that Mosconi won his titles against arguably the greatest straight pool players ever. Was de Oro's competition of the same caliber?

in response to the first post.

first, you point out that whoever makes the highest straight pool EXHIBITION run should be known as the greatest player of all time.

second, two people have beaten that although not in exhibition, and oh yeah, we only consider EXHIBITION right?.

and finally, you challenge those who believe that efren is the greatest that why he can't beat that? heck, he doesn't even care.

place mosconi in this era, and he'd be just some top 9 ball guy (e.g. earl, efren, ralf). straight pool? a john schmidt who made a 500++ ball run. the quality of competition is so much tougher these days. lucky for him to live in the past. yawn

bring up greenleaf, and he even comes up with the short end of the stick at times.

and yeah i believe john schmidt, players of today can beat that 526 crap if they have the motivation.

What in the world does saying if he practiced football he'd become a great running bck have to do with ANYTHING?

Your using an analogy comparing two totally different sports in order to prove a point someone was trying to make about two different games within the same sport. That's pretty weak and a tell tale sign of a failing argument.

Who can say how great a 14.1 playe Efren would become, would he be the greatest? Who knows but I'd wager my left leg that when you look at his ball control and skill level on a pool table that the transition would not be difficult at all for him to move to the top tiers of any game played with a cue stick.

Another bit of info

When Art Judice, a real good straight pool player from New York, told me that he played Mosconi In 20 exhibitions about the time Willie was getting ready to retire from competition. Art ran out on Willie, 150 out, two times...Willie ran 150 out on him ... 18. By the way, I watched Art run 282 at his room in So. Cal in about 1970. He would run balls each day until he run 100, then he would just go back and work the desk. Never took more than a couple of hours to get his 100.

There is of course one exception to the don't compare across eras rule, Babe Ruth was the greatest hitter of all time. Like Greenleaf, imagine if he was clean and sober.

Or on steroids.

Ever watch some old Mosconi videos?

I didn't know there were any videos of Mosconi in his prime playing straight pool. I would love to see them--do you know where I can find any?

Damn this Thread makes me wanna play some Straight Pool.:D

Holds head in hands....I gonna need a new Cue just for Straight Pool.
Heads off to Wanted/For sale forum.....................:D

who's to say

Mosconi said of Mike Sigel that he was the best player ever. That was said a decade ago.

I watched some tapes of Sigel in 80's and compared to the live Efren matches Ive watched and taped ones of Efren, Sigel seems to be a better player. Efren has more fan fare today. Who between Sigel and Reyes has the most championships and in what disciplines??

What is Sigel's high run?

Who can say how good Mosconi could have done on fast cloth with modern near perfect plastic balls. He played on super slow cloth with most likely clay balls. Total different conditions. We will never have an accurate answer. I know the balls spread alot better on the break shot on Simonis and that gives modern players a big advantage.
