I'm sometimes floored by how awful the money is in pro pool.

In a field this large and deep, a guy has to play incredibly well to even offset costs. I've mentioned this one time prior (and I know that sponsors can help, which I doubt this guy has), but to make the top 128 gets you back approximately the entry fee. The top 64 make a lousy $1,000. To win anything worth considering income you have to make the quarter-finals ($7,150). Sure, making $4,000 for 9/16 sounds reasonable, but after costs, that's jack squat.

With that said, I'd be thrilled to cash. Not for the money but for getting through Round One and having some bragging rights.
