Have an opportunity to purchase this Joss for $900. Within the last 6 months was sent to Joss and rewrapped by Dan. Dan also refinished the cue. It has an ivory butt and joint. Comes with 4 shafts (1 original to cue) none of which have ivory ferrules. There is an email/letter from Dan's wife describing the materials to the cue. There is also a receipt from Joss of the work done and back and forth emails between the owner and Dan with regards to the cue. Dan cannot pinpoint date due to no serial numbers with the first cues. He can only say that it was made by him (Dan) in the late '68 to early '69.
What do you think? Is $900 a good price?

I just looked in the blue book of cues and in my opinion it's priced about right if thats what you like. It may be worth 200-300 more with the 4 shafts as long as everything is straight. I would not pay anymore for it then $900 in this market. Very nice old Joss and good luck. Maybe some of the Joss collectors will chime in as I could be wrong.
 
I think $900 is a good price for this cue.
I play with a '68 Joss and I have turned down much more for it.
....has similar bar-bells on the after-wrap.
 
I think it's good also if you want a 68/69 joss to play with or to add to your collection.
 
Let us know what the rest of the cue looks like. With pictures. May be much more valuable than what's been described.

I appreciate everyone's input. I'll be picking up the cue tomorrow. I'll also take my own pictures of the cue and give my honest opinion of condition, etc..

again, thanks to all! Can't wait to pick it up.
 
The butt looks more like implex. Joss used a lot of implex in the early days.
Check to see if the ivory joint matches the butt.
The butt design doesnt match the rest of the cue.
I'd be careful to see if the cue has been altered.
I have a 73' joss with an implex butt cap that looks identical to that one.
Plus no matching black ring on the other end of the wrap.
Also, its unusual for a joss with ivory joint not to have ivory ferrules on shafts.

If the cue is all original ( with real ivory ) its worth a lot more that $900.
 
The information regarding the materials came straight from Dan. There's a letter from his wife listing the materials. The ring was added with the refinish work by Dan along with the Joss logo. It wasn't originally there. I have the emails where Dan said he'd add the ring/logo when he refinished it. Thank you for the info, though. I'll be sure and look the cue over and take it to one of the local pro shops to make sure it's as stated.
 
Definitely no ivory in that butt section. That's not a bad thing, as Joss in that era used Implex for those sections. I'm a little surprised it hasn't cracked by now. The joint collars are unusual for Joss, not their typical pattern for that era. But they did have some variation in those early days. As stated above, they usually did ivory ferrules, so it's unusual for these not to have them.

If it is authentic Joss, it's worth much more than $900. If you have the right correspondence, you should jump on it.
 
The owner is insisting that Dan himself said joint was ivory and pointed out how he was surprised it wasn't cracked. He states that he spoke with Dan while the cue was in Dan's hands. There is also a letter from Dan's wife stating the materials (including the ivory joint). I have sent Dan a message to get clarification.

Here's a picture of the ferrules. Call me crazy, but one seems a little Ivory-ish. What do you think? He says there are striations in the material.
