Afternoon Mr. Johnny sir,
If you're paying for a 20Mb downstream and Pitstop is showing 7.86Mb something is out of whack.
Curlyscues was right, you should be fine, however, you're not getting anywhere what you're paying for.
Couple things that can contribute to this..First thing is, Are you using a wireless router? This can contribute signifcantly to signal loss. This can be helped with the version of the router, not manufacturer but version. A,B,G and N, in that order provide you with the different throughputs N is the newest, and fastest, and subsequently costs more. Your wireless card in your PC has the same letter allocation. They don't have to match in letter, however, you're only going to get the speeds of the lower letter.
I would recommend using www.speakeasy.net, on the bottom right of the page you'll see "speed test" you can choose the city closest to you and that will give you a more accurate representation of your speeds.
If you're not using a router I would recommend contacting your service provider and tell them you're getting slow speeds and suffering from "packet loss".. (loss of information in the transmission of data) and they can set up a trouble call to come to your house and check it out.
If you have any questions at all don't hesitate to PM me and I'll help you in any way I can.

I work for a major cable internet provider --when you call tech support and ask to speak to a supervisor, the person that comes on the phone works for me. :)

Good luck and shoot me a line with any questions.

Ty very much. I will do the test and see what I get there. Yes I have wireless. Johnnyt

Anytime sir...glad I can offer something of substance....I'm usually asking the questions of what y'all know much better than me. Happy to be able to contribute something finally that I have "short stop game" with.

I've got a "G" router and "G" network card with a 10Mb connection... through SpeakEasy....I'm in Wichita KS and ran it from Dallas and got 9.293 down and 2.389 up.

Long story short....there's some work we can do to get you some better speeds...As before, don't hesitate one iota to drop a PM and I'll do the best I can to help.

Ty for the offer Mattei but with the boost I got from Roadrunner I believe it's fast enough to pick up all the streams. The truth is that i'm tech challenged and really don't want to touch it. Plus my wifes office machine is hooked to mine and God forbid she would be down for a day because I screwed up. I'd have to get a motel for a week. John

Actually with any cable service (which roadrunner is) you are paying for a cap on the bandwidth, not a guaranteed 20MBps. Cable is a shared internet service, which means you share a node with your neighbors. Depending on what they are doing or not doing will affect your overall speed uploading and downloading.

If you are having slow speeds, that doesn't mean you have packet loss, and if you call in and say that, chances are they are going to test it with you over the phone and you have a good chance of looking like a fool.
