last night i broke 57 times. i had 7 chances to run out. just seven.

of those 7 opportunities there were 2 spreads that needed perfect cue ball placement, just too tough for me. perhaps Efren could have done it.

once i ran out.

once i got hosed when the '7' ball skidded on me and missed dropping.

and three times i just messed up, although once the last 3 balls were in kinda difficult spots, somewhat close together.

Seven (7) times out of 57 breaks.
i dunno, does that seem like a normal percentage? not in my mind it doesnt, oh well. i watched so many times balls roll into my way, or leave the cue ball in the middle and no shot.

but i was smiling, laughing, and happy all the way through it though! didnt throw or break anything either.

That pretty much sucks. I would say work on your break. You are either not hitting them hard enough or not hitting them square enough to keep the cueball in control. Something is screwed up, that is for sure. That is not bad luck.

The "something that is screwed up" is the game you are playing. 9-Ball is a brain dead game with the fewest options of any game in pool. Play 14.1 or 8-Ball you will find it much more satisfying and rewarding.

That's a great statement...FOR YOU. I find 9ball very satisfying. You have one ball to shoot at, and I think it teaches you shape faster than playing 8ball. I play both, and each of them take a different mentality.

I saw Francisco make 5 balls on the break and he was hooked on the 6. He played safe and Corey ran out. It is brain dead as far as I am concerned.

Must have been a pretty crappy safety.

Hey, Gremlin !

I like one-pocket too, very intelligent and challenging game. But, I only enjoy it with a decent opponent... there aren't many around who can play one hole. And those who can't play, refuse to play... cowards...

9-ball banks is also a good game, I also practise it a little bit. It creates more confidence on bank shots, just recently at a big tournament I was comfortably shooting blan... banks :)

IMHO, the 9-ball break is depending on the table. On many tables the wing ball goes easily and you can concentrate on playing position for the 1-ball. On some tables you need to break as hard as you can to make some balls and rely on pure luck to finish on the lowest ball...

Have you tried other ways of breaking? I mean speed, placement, english, etc. I have a tendency to break from the right side, but I can make my breaks completely different just by using different english.

congratulations, prot, on enjoying the game. we already know you're happy when you're breaking something.

With all due respect DrCue,

but your 7 out of 57 figure may not be entirely accurate. There is always more than one way to run a table. 50 different people could look at a broken rack and come up with 50 different ways to run it. Maybe you are worrying too much about your break, when you should be practicing other techniques. Maybe start focusing on ways to sink your object ball and break up problem clusters, or other such ways to make the table more possible to run.

Of course I havent seen you play, dont know your speed, I just wanted to raise a possibility.

You're from Iceland ?? How is the pool scene there ? At least there are a couple of very lethal snooker players...

Protege,

I think your biggest issue is your expectations. You think you _should_ be getting more chances and better rolls. You need to stop expecting anything, and just play the situation that you face. I think you would find the game much less frustrating, if you stop comparing your stats to what you think you should be doing. Try reading "Pleasures of Small Motions" by Bob Francher.

And practice your break. It sucks. :) Really, though, breaking 57 times and recording what happened is excellent. Thats awesome practice. You can then try different things to improve your break, and compare the results. 99% of the players out there don't work that hard, and aren't that honest with themselves. I've got 3 different shots that I'll setup in the same postion, and shoot 10 times each. I can tell in about 10 minutes how well I'm shooting by keeping a mental note of the number of times I pot the ball and get the position I intended.

cheers,
jer9ball

You don't play one nine ball game for a match. If you do, I totally agree with you. It's braindead. ;)
