The Best Bar Box Player thread got me to thinking about some of the great 8 ball players. This is my top 5. I'm curious to hear the opinions of others.

Mike Carella - My vote for best 8 ball player is the late Mike Carella. Mike was a very good friend of mine and was the most dominating player in Florida. We made many trips up and down I-95 and I watched and I learned. Not a day goes by when I don't think about Mike Carella.

Larry Schwartz - His mind works like a rack running/cluster splitting computer. Great player and a great guy. He's forgotten more than most of us will ever learn about 8 ball.

Allen Hopkins - Now after all of the less than flattering things I have ever written about him in my books and on the internet, I have never denied the fact that he is one of the most gifted players in the history of the sport. Allen's straight pool knowledge transfers over beautifully to 8 ball. Say what you want about that stroke... Allen Hopkins gets the job done.

Boston Shorty - He was just a pure genius at the table. From break to game ball he was just so fun to watch. What made Mr. Johnson so entertaining was his personality. He was so unassumingly incredible.

Jay Swanson - A big man that had an even bigger game. Miss ya Swannee.

I witnessed Louie Roberts (aka "Saint Louie Louie") play some great One Pocket, but he was better known for his US Open 9 Ball championship as well as his World 8 Ball title

All the players you mentioned are Hall of Famers or at the very least, future canidates.

Efren Reyes, no doubt about it. 3 World 8 Ball
titles. Mika Immonen's pretty good too.

As beautifully as he plays all the games over the glorious green felt, I think the only game that Efren Reyes plays better than anyone else is 8 ball.

I was in Findlay Ohio and I meet a guy who had told me about Boston Shorty. He told me that Boston preferred the oversized cue ball on a bar box and even carried his own cue ball around. Is this correct?

Yes, that's true. Very colorful guy. One of Shorty's ways of saying he was going to beat an opponent was "I'm gonna shoot that guy right between the eyes."
