FYI, I just posted a new video that discusses and demonstrates the “official rules” of 8-ball, and shows why it is a much better choice than common “bar rules.” Check it out:

Contents:
0:00 - Intro
0:15 - Official Rules of Pool
1:00 - 8-Ball Rules
4:50 - Double Hit Fouls
8:33 - Other Common Fouls
9:59 - Wrap Up

As always, I look forward to your feedback, comments, questions, complaints, and requests.

Enjoy!

1-ball does not need to be on the foot spot.

1. At 1:50 you say if you scratch on the break, it's BIH in the kitchen? Why not BIH anywhere? I thought the only use for a kitchen was when breaking these days?

2. At 8:45 cue ball fouls. I thought it was cue ball fouls only these days. So a shirt touching a ball or only touching one non-cue ball is a BIH foul (at which point you have to ask if the opponent if they would like to replace it where it was)?

I always played that way in the old days but these days? People in my league would have a hissy fit if you called a BIH foul. Personally, I would prefer that because people have gotten lackadaisical and don't really try hard enough to not touch balls. And, they think it's O.K. to touch 2+ balls, cue ball fouls only -- yeah right.

I think the ball in hand for a scratch on the break is a league rule, but it seems to be more prevalent than ball in kitchen among the people I play. I think full table ball in hand is too big of a penalty for a scratch on the break in 8 ball.

As far as the other fouls, it seems like cue ball fouls only is typical but I haven't seen a definitive definition. In a friendly game I go with the flow but I'd like to see more discipline, including from myself.

As far as I know it's still BIH in the kitchen if the scratch is on the break but not after. As for cue ball fouls only I see that alot in league play but not during tournaments.

Because the rules are the rules. CSI/BCAPL differs on this, allowing BIH anywhere on the table after the break.

... only in leagues and some tournaments, not under the "official rules" of pool.

Dr. Dave, your example shot at 4:20 is the bar rules nightmare scenario. If that occurred in a real game, it would immediately cause a large-scale bar fight probably resulting in at least one fatality. You are clearly a billiards sadist to conceptualize such a shot, even for science.

That was a fun shot to both plan and execute. It took me a few tries to make it as nightmarish as possible. I think I succeeded. 🤓
