What is considered a legal hit on an object ball when it and the cue ball are very close together ( not frozen ) ?

hit the ball then any ball has to hit a rail or sink, just like any other shot.

That's kind of tricky, depends on what rules your going by. Legally the obect or any other ball including the cue must make contact with the rail after cue ball makes contact with oject ball first. Where I feel it becomes tricky is to make sure the you make contact with the cue ball once with your cue. Which means you may have to jack the cue up or hit the cue off to the side if there is a good chance you will come in contact with the cue ball again. I guess how close are you to your object ball??????

i play in apa leauge up here and it is legal to hit right through then even if they are frozen.

But if it's not frozen, then it's not legal to make a level double hit on the cue ball, even in the APA.

In the APA, you've got to jack up on the shot or if shooting level you have to be at an angle. I don't know if there's a certain amount of degrees as a guideline, I couldn't find the rule, but I'd say roughly 30-45 degrees.

In my area we play VNEA rules. If you are in that situation the rule for us is that you must shoot on a 45 degree angle. Either up or sideways. Otherwise you will be given either a foul for double hit or a push.

Here is a cool trick I learned in Vegas a few years back. If you put your tip as close to the CB as possible and set up in a finished stroke and have your muscles flexed as hard as you can you can actually shoot with a flat cue and not push or double hit as that it defies physics that a foul can occur. WARNING: this shot is tough and should be practiced before attempting. I have also been warned by refs that not all refs understand that shot and may call a foul regardless.

If you can't find this "double or multiple hits are OK as long as you have jacked up" in the APA on-line rules, then it's probably a bogosity that your LO has introduced. Maybe to decrease the number of complaints he has to deal with.

For the original poster: You need to ask the official in the particular situation where you are playing. I know the rule for the World Standardized Rules (BCA and WPA and most of the world). I don't know the rule for Jim's Bar and Grill or the Greater Milwaukee VNEA Pool Leagues.

The WPA rule is that if the cue ball is close to but not touching the object ball it is a foul to do either of two things: to hit the cue ball twice or to have the tip in contact with the cue ball when it hits the object ball. Be warned: most players are unable to judge this kind of foul, in my experience.
