8 ball rules

We had a tourney @ our Elks club last night, there are many different rules for 8 ball. We were trying to use ITP pro rules with some exceptions. Ball in hand, cue ball fouls only. One issue that came up was player broke and make solid, table still open, player shoots 3 way combo to make solid, a stripe was the middle ball in combo. Stripe slops in side. Player accepts this as legal shot since table still open after break and slop counts. Is this correct? Other player said I accepted solids when I attemped combo on solid. He wasn't happy. Who is correct.

If he intended to make the solid, then the stripe shouldnt count for him. I dont think the IPT rules are "slop" counts....its just open after the break. You can even shoot a stripe/ solid combo after the break since the table is open.

Agreed, and the way it would have been played in the leagues around here.

BCA, Valley, and IPT rules are all the same, regarding calling ball and pocket only. You don't have to indicate banks, kicks, or caroms. In the example given, the shooter was attempting to pocket a solid. If his indicated solid ball goes in (and in the designated pocket), it counts, and doesn't matter whether a stripe went in or not. Solids would then be his designated side.
The "attempt" at a solid makes no difference, and if the shooter had missed the combo, then the table would still be open for the incoming player.

Called pocket rule

In Call Pocket, obvious balls and pockets do not have to be indicated. It is the opponent's right to ask which ball and pocket if he is unsure of the shot. Banks and combinations are not considered obvious and both the object ball and pocket must be called. When calling the shot, it is NEVER necessary to indicate details such as the number of cushions, banks, kisses, caroms, etc. Any balls pocketed on a foul remain pocketed, regardless of whether they belong to the shooter or the opponent. If a shooter continually refuses to inform his opponent, even when asked, the captains or tournament officials should be informed. Continuous failure to verbally call the pocket can be ruled unsportsmanlike conduct.

The shooter did miss the combo and the stripe slopped in, we were playing that slop counts. The shooter ran the table of stripes and won the game. Is the correct?

With slop counts, sound like APA rules, and in that case the stripe that was pocketed would count and it would remain his turn.

This is a problem with APA rules, in that the rules state that you have what you make on the break. All other leagues play open table after the break, regardless of what was pocketed on the break. You can't do both...play slop counts, and open table after the break (unless you are just making up your own rules...and then it can be whatever you want). In the scenario you posted about, the shooter pocketed a solid on the break, and that should have decided his side, according to 'slop counts' rules (i.e.: APA). In that case when he pocketed a stripe inadvertantly on the combination shot (without pocketing his solid too), his turn would have ended, and his opponent would shoot stripes.

You are correct about the APA rule, but in the initial post it was stated that they were playing IPT rules. It sounds to me that they are making up their own rules and should decide BEFORE the game what the rules are going to be rather then during or after the game.
