8 Ball Strategy Question

My last stripe is 1-2" off end rail, left of center diamond. 8 ball 2-3'' off other end rail, first diamond on same side, CB left of stripe ball, middle table about one diamond from left side, tough cut shot to right corner. Opponent on 8 ball. If cut is made, shot on 8, win. Miss, lose. Bank to right opposite end (easy bank) leaves tough bank on 8. Could bank to miss and leave opponent tough but makeable bank. Bank to left corner by 8 ball leaves shot on 8 but bank miss might block pocket for opponent. Last game for all the marbles. What should I have done? ( I'm confident on cut shots, this one's about 80-90%).

Defense, hit stripe and try to leave cue ball on the end rail while stripe blocks the pocket where 8 ball would be banked to, or hit stripe straight on very soft and try to leave cue ball against stripe making opponent shoot over the ball

Seems to me the bank that might go in or might block the pocket is not a 80 to 90% winning possibility, maybe 50%. So I would cut it right in. The only reason I wouldn't cut it in is because I am playing poorly at the time. However, if I am playing poorly and I make the shot my confidence will shoot sky high and I will probably start playing better anyways. So go for it

very good answers. here's mine. an advanced saftey play. what i'm about to say, must be practiced like crazy. it has a difficulty level of 9 on a scale of 1-10. the shot is a follow/miss the kiss/snooker saftey! hit the stripe full! with right english, let the o.b. hit the short cush, come out, miss the kiss and have the cue ball turn after hitting the cushion and hide in the zone of the object ball! a beauty!!

I did make the cut shot, win the game. If I knew my opponent wasn't good at banks, I think I would have tried banking towards the right corner and leave him a tough bank. But what if I screwed up my safe and pocketed the stripe?
Bernie, I'll have to practice your shot, Thanks.

I would definitely shoot a version of Bernie's shot, depending on the exact angle and exactly where the 8 was, and exactly how far away the cue ball was. If I wasn't at least 85 % sure I would pocket the OB and leave a good 8 ball, then like I said before ,defense

Does this look like what you had?
START(%Hq5V3%JD6P3%P[4U8)END

Copy that code, open http://endeavor.med.nyu.edu/~wei/pool/preset/9ball.html
and click on paste and click ok twice.
