8-ball with drop pockets. Is this legal?

Suppose you have 2 or 3 balls on the table, and I am on the 8 ball.

I am shooting, and you have me hooked real bad. You're going to get ball in hand.

I decide to gather all the balls in the pockets, and put them all into one pocket. I then smash the cueball straight at the pocket, and I knock one of your balls back on the table. You have ball in hand.

What would your reaction be?

Why I'd just smile, break down my cue and say good night. That would be the last time I ever played you. You, sir, are a cheat and not even worth getting mad at.

Might as well just break out your jump cue and try to jam the cue ball up into your opponents face, fracturing his skull, thus making him concede the match.

It's about as classy...

I have had someone do something similar to me... instead they piled the balls in a pocket to avoid a scratch... I ended up winning the game/match. I walked up to the guy afterwards, and I told him that he should have known better. He agreed that it was a low move.

If you think we think you think this is possibly legal, we think you're a nominee for the Brightest Bulb Award, Mr PocketPool.

It was more a joke than anything. Do you honestly think I would walk around the table and gather up all the balls like that?

Ah Ha! So you did leave open the possibility that you thought we thought you thought you were just joshin' us. Whew, that's a relief.

PocketPoint:

We're seeing a stream of these "what if" threads where you purport an "innocent," "hypothetical" situation that obviously details a situation to either thwart the rules, weasel another shot at the table or a [cheap] win, or else a way to shark your opponent.

You must think it's "cute" to come up with these inane attempts at loopholing through the official rules or sharking your opponent. You must think it's cute to do something like intentionally and maliciously fill a pocket with your own category of balls, slam the cue ball into that overflowing pocket knowing that it'd rebound back onto the table, and "think" you're leveraging the excuse that "you hit your own ball -- it's a legal shot." You might think it's "ingenious" and "creative." You might even think that the fact it bothers many on here reading your thread that you've demonstrated "Exhibit A" of its "effective sharking technique." But it's nothing more than superficial cheating under the guise of "abiding by the rule book." I don't think even roughhouse bar pool stoops that low. You try that up here in NY, and in some places, you may not make it out of the place alive. Feh, forget about NY -- try that *anywhere* and I guarantee you Very Bad Results(TM).

Forget the hints of physical violence that other posters alluded to; you might be a candidate for jarring if you continue down this road. Scopolamine in your drink does wonders to "turn the tables" on a guy that thinks like you. Don't say you haven't been warned by the numerous replies you've gotten so far, an indicator that this type of thinking is the wrong road.

Ah, OK! But it's not April Fool's Day. :D

Seriously, you had some of us going there. But the warnings about even "hinting" about loopholing through the rulebook like that are still very apropos.

You're missing the point. I just wanted to see what your reaction would be. I never said I planned on doing it.

If I were playing fo fun, I might do it just as a joke with a friend.

I had an opponent pick a ball up and hand it to me rather then attempt a shot out of fear that they were going to break a three ball cluster.

I have had a couple opponents drill the cb strait in the pocket for the same above reason.

Playing league and the other team needed one point to win the round and the guy had no shot, so he drill his ball off the table.

The above first almost ended up outside in the parking lot

See, I wouldn't consider this is a "low" move. A stupid move yes, but I wouldn't call it low. The reason is that it is a foul if the cue ball touches any pocketed ball. So the guy is actually hurting himself by making it more likely that he will scratch because a CB that would have hung up in the pocket (and maybe corner hooked you) rather than drop is now deemed a scratch because it touched an already pocketed ball, and awards you with BIH.
