I played in my youth on an 8-footer with 1-piece slate, or so I thought.
Bought an 8-footer this Spring. Subsequently learned that my youthful table was a PRO-8, 92x46, not an 8.
So now I'm getting a Diamond Pro-8. It's the very biggest that will fit in my space. A 9 won't go.
Wait till I get a new house, though, it will have room for a 9.
I do agree that an 8 is a little weird. It seems a bit congested. However it's still a BIG advantage when you're practicing for 7s, I'd guess. I've played several hours on 7s this week (to try out the various Diamond pockets) and after practicing on an 8 with insanely tight pockets (a shimmed Olhausen), the 7s with loose pockets made me into Mr. Shootoutthelights.
I agree that 9s are the best, but I'd get an 8 over a 7 and I'd get either over nothing.
