I had someone ask me how I know it's a 1982 So to give you guys little bit of history about it I originally bought the cue from Bill Lister a custom cue maker in Florida. He gave it a full inspection which gave me a peace of mind before I purchased. We found out the wrap wasn't original so I had him change the wrap to a white linen with brown specks so it matched the cue better. Whenever he was doing this install he said underneath the wrap that Tim Scruggs wrote in pencil who the queue was going to and the year which was 1982. Which I think is pretty awesome that it has his hand writing. I'll attach a picture of this It's kind of hard to tell in the picture but the last name he wrote on there was "farrington" most likely this is who originally owned the queue and who he made it for. If you need any more information just let me know thanks for looking

Would you consider trades ? A mint JossWest and a Brian Mordt or JossWest and some cash ?

Looks like the date might say 2-12-72

Dang I think you may be right... Now that I zoom in and look at the other numbers a 7 matches the hand writing better...and it definitely does look like a 7... But wait that wouldn't make sense because didn't he come out with his first brochure in 1976? Unless... Unless he made this cue for some before he officially went out on his own? Can someone please chime in on this? Here is a better pic

Looked at it again. Might be 2-12-72 or maybe 3-12-72. The 12-72 is clear but the month less clear. Could be a 2 or 3.

Would it devalue the cue if you removed the wrap and made it wrapless so you could see the date maybe just leave the number 72. I think if the right custom cue maker did that it would be pretty awesome looking! I mean I know you want to leave these all original but the wrap has already been replaced and what is more original then Scruggs handwriting 🤷

wrapped cues have a thinner handle section so the wrap lays flush to the rest of the cue. You cannot make a wrapped cue wrap less without changing the whole handle section. Which at that point is pretty much rebuilding the cue. Would look cool but would cost a ton to do and de-value the cue at the same time unfortunately.

Instead of replacing the handle section could you wrap it with a wood veneer of the correct thickness?
I am no way suggesting this be done to any high end cues.

That’s a good question. I’m not sure if There’s wood thin enough that could contour that much and stay that way without cracking or flexing. Need a Cuemakers opinion on that one. I know wrapped cues do go in for wrapless conversions. The only method I’ve seen done is full handle change but there’s a ton of “tricks of the trade” I’m sure we don’t know about lol.

I built cues for over 20 years. I think the veneer wrap would be futile. Leave the cue alone. You don't want to do surgery on this cue.

I agree leave the Scruggs alone.
But is it possible to put a veneer on a handle?
They do make very thin veneers.

I don't think the veneer would contour correctly. It would probably crack trying and the handle would never true up perfectly round.

Still not sure if this cue is a 72 or a 82... From what I read Tim Scruggs didn't leave Joss and start stamping his cues with his logo until 79 I believe... So I think that would weed out the fact that that date wrote in pencil said 72... So I'm laying towards 82 now maybe I'll have an expert look at it one day.. here's some updated pictures... Put a new wrap on it because it wasn't the original wrap anyways... But I matched a 314 PreCat on it so now this cue has three shafts... Here's the pics okay now I'll cork it lol

Tim didn't start building cues until he worked at Joss in 75/76, and on his own in 1979 or so

He definitely didn't use a logo in the 70s

It's 1982 or later

The "Cork it" response, was referring to a Cork wrap.
Black stained cork would look nice on that cue...(y)
