9-b situation, 1p to the rescue !

A week ago I was playing scotch doubles with some cash at stake for a few hours with my friend. Well, the score was at hill-hill 4 apiece and our opponent(s) tried to play safe and left me this. The 6-ball was just partly available, but the 8-ball was severely blocking the cueing path for the swerve around the 7-ball.

After a few warmup strokes I figured that the swerve wasn't the right stroke there. I would've need to dig way too deep near the 8-ball, possibly fouling to it (all fouls count here, always). Well, I've been playing some 1pocket and in here the 1pocket and bank pool came to the rescue. Instead of swerving around the 7-ball, I elevated just a little bit with inside english and long banked & punched the 6-ball in the far corner and played an absolutely perfect straight in position for the 7 and for the run-out ! :D

You really should've seen our opponents' faces. We had to pick their jaws up from the floor after that one :D What actually rubbed the shot in was that before the shot I told them that "I think the bank is quite easy from here, it's a 1pocket bank" so they couldn't tell it was a fluke afterwards.
After that shot & runout, the other one of our opponent's team quit

Just a nice(ish) shot I wanted to share with you. It was a thrill for me and for my partner.

Amazing

that you did not double kiss on that shot. You
must have shot it pretty strong. Scotch doubles
can be sort of fun sometimes, 8 ball or 9 ball, plus
sometimes you can get matched up that way, when
you couldn't by just yourself.

Actually, my partner is not a really strong shooter, just a good gambler with good nerves. Very rarely runs a whole rack. Our opponents were just below my level but still above my partner's. If you add up our skills, our team was the underdog. And I've learnt to play scotch doubles in a way that I always leave my partner perfect and make him shoot the easy balls. My team has always been the underdog :)

Yeah, the double kiss was possible, but I have been practising almost similar banks and I have gotten a really good feel already how near the rail the object ball can be and still have the bank on. If the ball would've been just a fraction nearer the pocket, I wouldn't have had the bank on.

Having the cueball get double kissed is usually disastrous, especially in 1p.

and this one

Last night I was playing Cardiac Kid, from this forum. He was stringing lots of nine ball racks together set after set. In any event I was left with shooting the 3. I banked the 3 x sides.

I jumped the 3 over the 7.

A very pretty shot, Mikko. The bank pool players all seem to know that one. As for me, I'd be too scared to play it.

Great shot by the way. It's great when others can see it in a real game situation huh? Thanks for sharing.

Somebody throw me a bone here. I am on a new computer and I have not downloaded the pool table viewer (for lack of the correct name). Please somebody give me the link to see the shot in question. Thanks!

That is what I was thinking....I would have hit the same shot much softer to play for the safe on the side rail using the 9-ball an or 7-ball as a blocker....(probably would have sold out a bank or safe though)

Probably you're right. Though, the shot felt so right at the time so I just had to go for it. And the table had really tight unforgiving pockets but I still split the wicket with that one, lol. Well, the angle was such that I could not have thinned the 6 for a safety, I would've have double kissed coming off the long rail. So I had to hit it thicker and thought that the best option is to go for the bank. The safety would have needed a little bit more speed than I wanted and I could have easily sold out the 6. The opponents were very capable of jumping.

Hmm, lately my game has turned to be more aggressive than what it used to be. I think I want to have more chances at winning the match and like to go down guns blazing rather than ducking an "obvious" but difficult shot. I guess it's all about the state of mind you are at that moment you face a difficult situation.

Great shot!
I think I played a safety:

Thanks. I see your approach to this shot is Efrenish
:p

Actually, that particular match was something special. I was pulling off miraculous shots all the time. Here's another which I did in the same match.

Wasn't perfect though, the angle for the 5 was 1" away from straight in. Sheesh, how bad can you be... And I of course apoloziged to my teammate for the bad position who was laughing his a$$ off and our opponents were picking up their jaws from the floor again :D
