9 ball handicapping league recommendations

Those of you in a 9 ball league, can you tell me how it is handicapped or provide me a link to a website where it is described.

I'm just curious what has been the most successful way to handicap individual games or sets in a league. 8 ball is quite easy, but I am not sure how it is done in 9 ball.

By games in the match is the way a couple of leagues around here do it. Here is some info:

Bob, do you have teams? We have 3 person teams here (new league forming). I looked briefly at 12 and I can see that for individuals but that means the handicap will fluctuate weekly. The way it normally works is like an APA rating that remains fairly static over the year.

There is no reason that a similar system can't be used for teams. You could just give one team a start according to its rating. If you want to try to maintain individual ratings as well, it's a little more complicated.

I don't feel that the rating should be stable over the year. I think it should change -- a little -- after each match. One way the ratings systems like the APA system are broken is that the divisions are too coarse. A strong 4 against a weak 5 and a strong 4 against a weak 4 are examples of resulting unfair matches.

Also, the adjustment of ratings in the APA is not transparent. The method in "NPL"-like systems is completely open and any player can figure out his rating change after each match. It is dead simple. It's also fair, which a lot of players don't like, but that's another matter.
