9 ball odd situation

boogieman

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that ping.
9 ball, 3 ball is hanging in the pocket on a miss. Opponent shoots, misses 3 ball but the cue ball contacting the rail vibrates the table enough that the 3 falls. What is the rule on this?

I’m sure somebody smarter than me will correct me if I’m wrong, but…

Unless it was so clear that it’s undeniable that three ball was not touched at all, as in missed by a LOT, then the evidence supports that the three ball actually was grazed and fell in as a result of the shot.

If it was an absolutely clear miss, then as with any time at a ball falls in without any contact, it would be replaced and the game would continue as if it had not fallen.

It was very obvious that the CB missed the 3B. It hit about the rail about 3" from the 3B.

We tried to figure out what the rule actually was. We ended up flipping a quarter to just move the game along. It's really odd though, I've seen it happen from someone bumping into the table but this was entirely from the CB hitting the rail and not the table being moved. That 3B had to be hanging so near the edge that it's unreal.

In that case, as I said, the ball gets replaced on the edge of the pocket and the game continues as if it hadn’t fallen.

from the WPA rules
the bolded part is from me to accentuate the (to me) relevant to this case rules.
since the 3 was not contacted it "fell into the pocket by itself"
if a ball falls into a pocket because of "settling" it is restored

8.3 Ball Pocketed

A ball is pocketed if it comes to rest in a pocket below the playing surface or enters the ball
return system. A ball near the brink of a pocket partly supported by another ball is considered
pocketed if removal of the supporting ball would cause the ball to fall into the pocket.
If a ball stops near the edge of a pocket, and remains apparently motionless for five seconds, it
is not considered pocketed if it later falls into the pocket by itself.
See 1.7 Balls Settling for
other details. During that five second period, the referee should ensure that no other shot is
taken.
.7 Balls Settling

A ball may settle slightly after it appears to have stopped, possibly due to slight imperfections
in the ball or the table. Unless this causes a ball to fall into a pocket, it is considered a normal
hazard of play, and the ball will not be moved back. If a ball falls into a pocket as the result of
such settling, it is restored as closely as possible to its original position.
If a settling ball falls
into a pocket during or just prior to a shot, and this has an effect on the shot, the referee will
restore the position and the shot will be replayed. The shooter is not penalized for shooting
while a ball is settling. See also 8.3 Ball Pocketed.

from the WPA rules ...
Here's a link where you can find the rules as well as the "rule regulations" which describe how to apply them in special situations.

It's a little surprising and saddening to me that so few pool players have ever read the rules. I used to look forward to the new edition of the rule book -- annual when I was learning -- to see if anything had changed and to see the new list of champions. Mr. Stone, who ran the rec center, got one each year.
