9-ball vs. one-pocket: A question

Someone mentioned to me recently that they wanted to start playing 1P, but was warned by other players that 1P will ruin their 9-ball game.

Now, I am sure the merits of both games and their subsequent comparisons have been discussed at length on AZB, but I was curious as to your take on the above-mentioned claim?
 
Maybe my skill level isn't enough to notice, but I can't see how playing 1P (or any other game) would ruin your 9-ball game. The only effect I could see, is that 9-ball could seem too boring after playing other games (personally, I don't enjoy playing 9-ball, not because it's easy, but there doesn't seem to be as much thought that goes into it as there is in 1P or 14.1).
 
Actually, this is a far more accurate list of things that will ruin your 9ball game:

Marriage
Children
Boxing
1 pocket
 
One pocket will help you when playing other games such as 9 ball or 8 ball. You will begin to see shots that you really didnt pay much attention to before after playing one pocket such as banks (2 way shots) and kicks and even safeties. JMO.

I think saying one-pocket will ruin your 9-ball game is a lot like saying soccer will ruin your basketball game. Only if you quit practicing basketball!

The only way 1Pocket can ruin your nine ball game is the very real possibility that you might not ever play that dumb game anymore after you start playing 1P.

When you learn a lot in one pocket it opens your eyes to much more in all other games. My cue-ball, paterns, and safties are years above that of so many players who play my speed and slightly better in 9Ball.
 
Good to see we have good nonbiased replies such as "that dumb game" "that boring game" talking down 9 ball.

Southpaw is right.. as with every game. the more games you play the more shots you see. They all have their own unique feel to them. Much like with efrens 3 cushion skills he will sometimes do a 3 rail kick at a ball instead ofa 1 or 2 rail kick because the return leave is that much better. How many people will just fire a 3 rail kick safe with confidence that has no experience in other games?

The only game I personally dont like is cut throat.

what throws them off is just the difference between the big table and a bar table, since most 9 ball is on bar tables. Speed control for shape, and banking on a big table is different than a bar table.

Want to have some fun, give someone an upper before they play 1 pocket and a downer before they play 9 ball - same guy!!! ....:rolleyes:
