Definitely the carom! It's a two way shot - a chance at the 9-ball
and hopefully tucking the 1-ball behind the 3-ball. Yes if you don't make the 9-ball the kick is easy. And even if you leave the 1-ball exposed, you are still not leaving a shot and you might have already won!
A very wise man I play with on my lucky days (maybe he started this thread ... maybe!

) once told me:
1. Always look for the two way shots - look for the defense even in an offensive shot
2. If you have the chance to win and the run out isn't really there, go for it
and # 3, the most important one!!
Try to never kick the object ball near the 9-ball. You just risk a fluke game win for you opponent!

So for me, playing safe by placing the CB behind the 3 is dangerous! The run out is VERY difficult! Go for the win!
