9ball ruling question

Sorry Cleary. You are in the wrong this time. What I don't understand, is you are supposed to know the rules you are playing by. Why do you get upset when you commit a foul clearly written in the rules that you didn't bother to read at some point?? Why are you mad at him for actually playing by the rules? It doesn't mean jack if that is the way you normally play, this time you were playing by different rules than you normally play by.

Jaywalking is against the law but everyone does it. If you got a ticket for it, you would be pretty pissed.

I was simply trying to be nice, catch the ball for him and hand it to him. Guess next time I'll let it fall and he can go get it from the return. No more being nice...

Cleary, I'm going to put this as best I possibly can. No respectful professional puts his hand in the pocket and then jerks it away the moment he realizes it's not gonna scratch. This is a very amateur thing to do. It's just like sweeping the cueball after pocketing the 9. Professionals don't do that. They make the 9, score the bead, get their break cue AND THEN get the cueball. In sum, the shooter doesn't get to say "it's okay, I'm not gonna scratch".

Was it cheap to call foul on you? Maybe. Maybe the proper thing to do is give you a good slap on the wrist (which is likely what I would have done). Putting your hand in the pocket is a concession of BIH. Once you concede BIH, you can't take it back.

Reaching into a pocket is in the rules, don't see why anyone would get mad if they were called on it. If the other person wants to call it, it's their right.

I have a friend who would hit the cueball when it was feet away from a pocket if it looked like it was going to scratch. On his shot of course, he'd concede the scratch even if it looks like it was heading to the pocket. I made him stop doing that in matches since many times table roll or something would make the ball hang up instead of drop. We'd be playing partners for money and he'd start grabbing the cueball before it went in the pocket, drove me nuts LOL

I've also had people come up to the table, start to take out the balls when I'm on the last ball (8 or 9) and then stand there waiting for me to shoot it in.

Well, it is an amateur league and we are both amateurs. I'm very far from a professional. But either way, I think it's very cheap to call a foul on that. I've never once seen that called on someone and I've seen that situation happen a lot. I was simply trying to be helpful and get the ball for him and I was penalized for it. Won't happen again.

And I've seen MANY professionals sweet the cueball after pocketing the 9ball.

I don't think you're quite getting me. Yes, we're all amateurs but on league night, many of these players put on their pro caps and play make-believe. You have to cater to this if you want your matches to go smoothly. Look, I know you and I know you'd never do anything shady and the purpose of the rule is to eliminate shady shit. By calling foul on you, you think he's saying you're shady. He's not. He's just playing make-believe.

Well, I put him in a make-believe coma and beat him good after that.

I agree with you on this one..I've seen pros and others sweep the cue-ball
many times after making the winning shot....and I ask them not to do it.

I've never called foul....but somebody WILL take advantage of it and stop
whitey from scratching. I've seen a money session end because of this.
...when the guy grabbed the cue-ball, there was a possibility of a scratch.
