A 9ball question

I've never played 9ball before but after watching the Archer vs. Thorston match I thought I would try and play, but I'm having some difficulty understanding how the game is played. All I know is you gotta hit the lowest balls first before you can pocket the 9. Right now I jusr did a break and I want to get the 1 ball in the corner pocket but, the 5 ball is in my way. Could I hit thje 5 ball into the 1 ball to make it go into the pocket or is that against the rules?

That is against the rules. You need to hit the one first in that situation. Thats what makes the game a challenge
