I just wanted to let everyone know that i am not always complaining about the current state of pool or pool rooms or the business of pool. I have a strong love for the game, its players, and especially the cues of which i now have ten great ones and always looking for more. Just wanted to let everyone know that i had a great pool day a little while back. My buddy and I met up on a tuesday night when the pool room is empty. Its empty for no reason other than its tuesday and its slow. So I called him up and told him that it was perfect straight pool conditions for us. Quiet enough to focus on the high run goal of the day which for me is a rather meager one but hey Im trying.
So we start up BS'ing about the days events and life in general and as we play longer it gets quieter and quieter both of us focusing on the task at hand. Now we are no pros by any means but it felt like it. The only table light on in the place and Im with my best friend just relaxing and shooting pool. No pretense no tournament no money on the line just loving the game. Occasionally we will talk about a shot or a stroke or hey did you see that cue Shane Van Boening was playing with but all in all just focusing on the game.
Im probably the one who broke the silence more but for some reason its a perfect time. This relaxed pace where you really can think over a shot and if you miss no one to judge or to analyze aside from yourself. Basically what i am trying to say is try it some time. Go to your local pool room when its empty. Play some pool any game with a good friend and just play, just play to play. As i said before no pretense no posturing or grandstanding. I mean our sport is technically still considered a game. Games are meant to be fun and basically this is the funnest time in our game that I know. Its one of those times that makes you want to come back to the game. To find that joy and that pleasure in simply playing our game. I truly believe that if more people found that joy in the game in simply playing, dont get me wrong there is nothing wrong with competition friendly or otherwise but, that they would excel exponentially. Pick something up they missed before because they were so focused on looking good shooting, or beating "that" guy.
Find the joy folks is all im saying. Its still there I know it. For each person its different. Some thrive under the pressure of the cameras and the lights. Me personally I thrive in a local room BS'ing with my buddies and knocking em around.
