A decent player losing to a banger?

Do you have any stories about skilled players losing a match against someone you would surely classify as a banger? I made a thread about your own experience with bangers some time ago, and some of the stories and responses were excellent, so I'm curious if some of you know any similar situations happening to anyone, yourself included.
 
In an even match, in a race over 2 racks, should never happen or be so rare as to be statistically irrelevant.

Every time I can remember losing to much worse player in a short race was when I missed or scratched on the last few balls in 9 or 10 ball or scratched on the 8 in 8 ball.

I lost a race to 2 in 9 ball once because I hung up an 8 ball and the second game the guy went for a 2-9 combo which he missed totally (the 2 ball did not even contact the 9) but then the 2 banked off the rail, kicked the 9 from behind sending it into the path of the cueball which was traveling forward and knocked the 9 into the pocket he called.

I have plenty about bangers losing to decent players, if you want to hear those.

I once beat Efren Reyes in an exhibition challenge match. Nine ball, race to one. So there you go.

Wait, who said he didn't plan it that way? He might not be a banger at all :grin:

The combo? No-one on the planet would play it that way in a match. It's like a .005% chance of it working. It was probably the luckiest shot I ever saw.

I even posted it when it happened with a diagram.
 
I once lost to a guy with a screw on tip. I think it was the blast breaks and the powerful unplanned shots that got me!
 
One time I was playing this guy who broke like happy gilmore on the golf course...

I think I lost to that same guy, he must have went through 4 or 5 screw on tips because of that damn ram shot, he just kept using the ram shot, there was nothing I could do...

Happens all the time in nightly tournaments where the skill levels are across a wide range and the races have to be short enough to finish the tournament that night. Eventually, the spots get to the point where it's just a matter of luck. Anyone can win when they are getting 4 games and the 8 in a race to 7, especially when they are getting that spot against a B player that's likely to miss late in the rack at least a few times. They probably won't win enough to cash, but that occasional upset is what keeps them coming back.

That's why I hate the idea of handicapping in the first place. I love when an underdog beats a really good player, but only when he/she does it in a fair match. I enjoy the feeling of playing and defeating a much better player by giving everything I've got, just as I respect lower players who managed to defeat me. But both would mean very little to me if the games were handicapped.
 
This thread needs a ram shot and....

When I was 20 yrs old I beat trick shot artist Jack White in a game of Last Pocket. I was a full blown banger in them days and had more raw talent than a clue about how the game was supposed to be played. Absolutely zero concern for where the ball ended up... I would just make the next shot and that was that. I ran out on Jack and he smiled as he congratulated me on a game well played (yeah right).

Jack was a sterling gentleman and a great promoter of cue sports in the armed services and around the world. God bless u Mr. Kalabash, wherever you are.

Incidentally, I have not seen or heard of a banger winning a game/set/match/tournament since that of my own experience. It is a rare bird to be sure. Just yesterday I atomized a banger that was honestly as good a shot as I am. It was a tortuous demise that I did not have to work hard at in the least bit. Jam up leaves will crush a bangers soul.

You see it fairly often in short race barbox 9-ball tournies. It's easy to get lucky and even the bangers can step it up and run out on a barbox.
