A good starter cue.

go to your local pool hall. They should have some cues for sale be it a new Players or used Mcdermotts and perhaps used Meucci's. Ask if you can try one or all to see which one "feels right" to you and judge your purchase from that.

just my 0.02

What he said is correct. I would suggest wrapless, big pin, wood to wood joint, 19 ounce, phenolic sleeved joint area, radial pin if you can get it.

McDermott makes some inexpensive ones. You can find gems in the wanted for sale section here also. With this description.

Go up in price to 600 and get a Ted Harris cue. He has some on his website available NOW!

If you get the Harris It will probably be your first and last cue purchase because you can't get any better then his wrapless merry widow cues!!!

Happy shopping and merry Xmas!

If you want a good solid cue to get you started, and don't want to have to refinance your car to get one, come talk to me.

I thoroughly enjoy playing with my Dale Perry cue with a DP-R shaft. Usually a whole flock of new ones going for $100-$150 on ebay. I have read some controversy about them in this forum but little or none of it was about quality or value for the money. I also have a nice vintage custom converted Titleist but the Perry cue plays (for me) just as well so I generally shoot in my leagues with it.

Nothing wrong with any of the others recommended here either as far as I know. So far my cue is not to blame for any of the shots I have missed. A lot of the new cues, including Dale Perry cues, have an adjustable weight system.

When I first started my friends let me use theirs. They're all pretty good shooters and I tried out joss McDermott dufferin and a pechauer. I ended up liking the pechauer the best so I bought a less expensive one for 250 and a nice 1x1 case for 60 and that's still what I use today and its been about 4 years

If it were me buying a good cue to start out, but not wanting to spend a bunch of cash,
From my experiences I would say try to find what alot of guys are saying
maybe a mcdermott or viking would be a good starting point. I prefer meucci myself
But any of those 3 can be purchased used off ebay under 200 pretty easily ingood condition and look pretty nice

I miss spoke when I said "break the bank". What I ment to say was what cue would you start out with if you not sure how much you going to play. You know.....just testing the water to see how much I'll enjoy the game. I really didn't want to spend $300 or $400 bucks to find out it wasn't for me. But at the same time, I want a cue that gives a good experience for the money. Maybe a few hunderd dollars.

I found a McDermott cue with a G-core shaft for $210 and Meucci Black Power Piston Pool Cue with a 314² Predator Shaft for $325.

How do those look?

Also, thanks for all of the private messages.

if you gonna test to see how much you''ll enjoy the game I suggest keep playing with a house cue. everyone here became obsessed with the game before they even took a shot, they knew they would. So again, if you dont even know you''ll like the game spend $50 on a stick and go from there

The first cue I got is an 80$ Fury cue. It's a good cue for the price, nice looking also. Not the best, but for entry level, sure... Also there are some cheap Cuetec cues. Also a few Dufferin are cheap. How much are you willing to spend though? There are a lot of Scorpion cues for about 100-130$...

If you want to start with a custom then look into dale perry. They usually run under $200. The quality is decent. Dale started selling on Ebay and killed the value of his cues but they still play decent for the price.
