a lot of cue question!

Hi everyone,

im new to your forum, i read a lot on it and i decide to subscribe.
(found it when i was searching for cue reviews)

So im in the market to buy a new cue, my old dog ate the shaft on my present cue! (don't be afraid i don'T have this dog anymore, for other reasons) Anyways i think it's a cheap cue (harvard) my mom gave it to me 10 years ago when i start playing pool more often!

So now im a little confuzed, i read somewhere that on a cue, the shaft works for something like 80% of the cue, the tip 15% and the but 5%. (what about the joint?)

My question is what is the purpose to get an expensive cue when you put a 200$ ob or predator shaft on it, if the but counts for 5% of the cue?

Another question i got , if for exemple i take a predator sneaky pete vs a model with nice inlay and all the art on it, if the same wood is used for the two cues, the difference in price paid will really be for all the ''decoration''. So the sneaky pete really works the same for sometime half of the price? (i take predator for an exemple because it's the first name to come in my head)

It's where i am, buying a new sneaky pete, an ob or predator shaft to put on my really standard but i got, or a used custom cue?

I don't play with a lot of different cue so it's hard for me to know wich kind of joint, tip and shaft i prefer...

I saw on a web retailler a joss cue (i think is the bottom of the line) with an ob-1 shaft for something like 240$ (i was telling my self is like 30 box extra for the but.. could be a nice bang for the buck)

The same web retailler got nice rebate on old generation predator sneaky pete.

I also found a used jacoby in the for sale section of this forum!

So i don't know what to do, i never tried low deflection shaft, as i can see, some like it some don't. Maybe i should give it a try, maybe it's more safe to go with the jacoby with a standard shaft and try later an ob or predator on it (it also depend on what you guys answer on my first question: what is the purpose to buy expensive but for the 200$ ob or predator shaft, if its only for looking purpose the joss one look like a nice deal for 240$)

*** My post could be hard to read, there a lot of question in the same post and english it's my second language. Just want you to know guys that i really apreciate time spent answering my question and give me good advise!

Welcome to the AZB forums!

That's sad, I still have my first cue and won't sell it for anything.

I remember reading that thread also. There is some merit to that thread, but you'll have to keep in mind that all cues are different to a certain degree. There is no exact consistency from a scientic perspective on each cue being exactly the same compared to another as many different variables could affect playability of the cue.

My question is what is the purpose to get an expensive cue when you put a 200$ ob or predator shaft on it, if the but counts for 5% of the cue?

Say you have a 5/16x18 SS joint with an OB shaft compared to a 3/8x11 wood joint, the cue's play will probably be similar, but the feedback through the cue will still feel different. So to answer your question... Yes, there would be a difference.

Another question i got , if for exemple i take a predator sneaky pete vs a model with nice inlay and all the art on it, if the same wood is used for the two cues, the difference in price paid will really be for all the ''decoration''. Harvey Martin used to say that he did not want to use points or inlays because he felt it weakened the cue. I have played with various pointed and inlaid cues that I don't think that it matters in terms of strength. The cue will hit/feel specific to that cue or cuemaker. My honest suggestion would be to try different cues of the same type that you are interested in first and then make a decision. If you can make it to a billiard store that allows you to test out the cues, that is a good one. If you can go to a billiard expo, that's even better where you can test out cues that you are interested in and pick the one that feels right to you.

Depends on you. I personally like the standard shafts that come with my customs. I have used predator shafts before because felt that I couldn't move the cueball as well with them. I personally use a lot of spin in my shots, I am used to the deflection, and I already adjust for it. With the predator shafts, I felt that I couldn't apply as much spin to the cueball as I normally could. This is just my opinion. It could well have been bad tips or too hard of a tip on the predator shafts, I don't know. I haven't bothered with experimenting with them. There are a lot of people here that like predator and OB shafts. So what I say to you is, use what works best for you. I've used standard shafts for a long time, that's just what I'm used to.

I don't play with a lot of different cue so it's hard for me to know wich kind of joint, tip and shaft i prefer...

I suggest getting two shafts with your cue. Start with a cue that is inexpensive so that if you destroy the shaft from too many ferrule changes to find the ferrule that you like, it won't be expensive to replace.

If you don't plan on experimenting with ferrules and tips, stick with the Jacoby. A custom will hold its value a lot better than a manufactured cue. You maybe able to get at least what you paid for it when you sell it later down the road, if you do decide to do that.

I strongly suggest trying an LD shaft before buying one. Talk to friends, join a league or tournament and make some friends that might have them. Try out as many cues as you can before you decide. Its better to have a good idea of what kind of hit/feel that you are looking for first before just randomly buying a cue.

We all start off around the same spot. I too had the same question about what to buy and what to look for. After having shoot pool for so many years, I know what kind of hit/feel I want, so those are the types of cues I look at. You start to develop an idea of what features in a cue are what you want.

First welcome to AZ Billiards, I think you will find a wealth of useful information but, you must separate the good from the bad.

As for cues no one can tell you what is good for you, before you buy anything take some time and try it out. If it doesn't feel right it never will, price is not something that effects how a cue will work for you, you can spend $25 or $400 and not find what works best for you. As a guide line get the best deal you can on something that feels right to you, there is no one stop answer as some may try and lead you to believe.

There is no substitute for practice and individual ability and no cue, shaft or tip is going to change that. The best these things (Tools) can do is enhance what you are already capable of or what you are able to learn with time.

Again Welcome and good luck with you search.

Said quite well! :)

Thank alot guy for the tip you gave me.

I will always keep my first but, since its got a shaft with a lot of dent on it, i will sand it some day, just to be better looking and keep it as a decoration in a future pool room.

I've gone to a local billard store, two day ago, there not a lot of nice place to shop for cue here in quebec. All the store i find got cue that doesn't interest me. (?%/ like cuetec... the best they got is lucasi).

Anyways i decide to take another direction, i've know that in my city there a cue maker who seem to make a really nice works. There some Pro's here who play with is cue.

Presently i play with me brother cue, (he don't really play pool, is cue is a gift he use twice) so i put a new tips on it, something seem no that bad(talisman med.) and i will finish me season with it, and take the time too look with the cuemaker in my city and jacoby and some other what i should get. (by the time i will try to try the more cue i can to see my preference).

That's a really good idea, its great that you have access to a backup cue to finish out the season! Taking your time is the right way! Good luck!

if u're talking about layani those cues are great players. but they're not for everyone since his special joint puts more weight towards the front of the cue and not everyone prefers that.

English might be your second language but you get your point across quite well. Canada is almost like the 51 st state anyway.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing as I read through the thread. I would never be able to express myself so well in any language other than english. I wish I could. The OP is to be complimented.
