A lot of low opinions on 9 ball, me included, what about 8?

I started the thread and don't mind going off topic at all, as long as you're talking about pool or anything related it's all good to me.

I enjoyed watching that Kevin Trudeu promoted 8 ball thing someone mentioned, whatever it was called. I would have watched it every time it came on if it had ever continued. Even though I hate the man, him being a born scammer bilking old ladies for their last dollar with worthless junk on tv. It's no suprise to me he ripped off or still owes people for that.
Glad to see him fail, extremely glad to see him fail but sad not to see more pool on tv though.

And someone said the WPBA has to pay to get their stuff aired? Really with all the advertisements? All it is, is one big ad anyway. Really I'm suprised they'd have to pay, I love watching those ladies.

Editiing can cut out thinking and slow uneventful parts of any type of game, so I don't think it's fair to state that a thinking game isn't fit for tv because of the slow pace. They can FF through thinking, or handle it in many different ways with editiing and commercials or commentary or flipping over to other matches or split screen advertisement crap during those slow moments or whatever.

I don't think anyone ever has done pool on tv right even still, and often the commentators have been pretty bad or made the game even more boring or annoying that it already would have been. An obvious lack of money and time invested in making the show entertaining most often. And too often they overdo the sales and advertising parts of it and just shove it so full of commercials for the same stuff over and over to where you almost can't take it anymore. Chalk of can get my table cleaner than new, really? Hearing the same thing for the 100th time it still sounds just as absurd as the first time but much more annoying.

If it ever had the kind of money and time and post production or live editing on par with other sports I bet the tv coverage would be good for any type of game, and the sport would still be popular and not dying. Mismanaged all the way around as far as tv goes.

What is the story behind why there are no longer any of the mens games on tv, and only the WPBA is left anyway? I never heard what actually happened.

I don't think any of this stuff is off topic because 9 balls poularity on tv directly affected how the local tournaments switched to it also anyway, and that was at the heart of my whole rant against 9 ball. And to say luck doesn't play a part at high levels of skill is bull, I just watched the color of money race to 120 from years ago I'd never heard of or seen before on youtube. What a match! And many shots both Efren and Earl relied on luck and hitting them hard on plenty of occasions, more so Earl when he lost his mind like he always does but Efren too. And there was a ton of 9 ball early wins that didn't take skill, just luck of where the 9 was sitting or luck off the break. It's already too easy to need to include that stuff as a win.

Anyone wishing to see just how easy 9 ball really is when you have learned position and pattern play properly, just watch that whole color of money thing on youtube between Earl and Efren to see how it's done. Runout after runout in a lot of it and yet still a tight race for nearly 240 straight games. 9 Ball is excellent practice to learn position anywhere on the table and fun to watch, that I do fully agree with, but not the best competition. Even if it were all call pocket still there's the 9 on the break or lucky 9 playable position for an early win.

Not sure exactly how the WPBA deal with ESPN works, but I've heard that as well. Perhaps the WPBA pays a fee for the time slot and sell or shares in the ad revenue, not sure. I doubt the ad revenue is much considering it is sensitive to ratings/viewership numbers.

9 Ball and 8 Ball are both good games, but I don't really dislike many games played on a pool table. I think 8 Ball has more nuance and like it for that reason but there is luck in both games, not just 9 Ball. I play in an 8 Ball league and it is simply fact that in any given game you can beat the best guy in the league or lose to the worst.

In just about any game, all dealing with rolling balls and spin, there are going to be some rolls and lucky breaks here and there, and I'm not entirely convinced ALL luck should be legislated out of pool. We would need to start by eliminating the break in all games except straight pool and 1 Hole. Besides, you have to admit it was pretty exciting for the crowd when Busty won the 2010 9 ball World Championship:
