agical ride on the final Saturday of the DCC
This was my first time at the DCC....arrived on Thursday evening...about 6 hours late because of plane connection problems...
After a $55 cab ride from the airport...went to see the action...as I am from Toronto...went and found John Morra and he was just finishing up his last match of the night...
On Friday meet Rick and Walter from Washington DC...and we chummed around together the rest of the tourney...we followed John again and I kept an eye on Jason Klatt who was also rolling along...
On Saturday...first match out of the gate at 10:00 am...John played Dee Akins...with score 4 to 1 for John. Dee conceded as he wasn't feeling well.
Next up for John was Niels Feijen..Niels was breaking really well and ran away from John ...9 to 2..This was John first lost...
so he bought back in...
Things didn't get any easier as John drew Dennis Orcollo. John got off to a good start and then Dennis came back at him...with score 7 to 5...Dennis missed a long shot and left the table open...(this was the first time I had seen some reaction from Dennis)...it appeared to me that for the first time he realized that he could lose this match...and he was correct ...giving Dennis his first loss.
Next up was Mike Dechaine...dont know about this man...first thing - he didn't like the white ball...then he had some concerns
about the racking....with the score 7 to 6 for John...Mike was up and the 9 and 8 were kissing and Mike tried to swing the ball around the table and break them loose but he missed..(Rick said to me that he thought Mike should have just brought the white down the table and hook John, thus keeping control of the table..I agreed)...John then hooked Mike. Mike hit the hook but left the ball in the open and John ran out that game and the last game.
Moving into the TV table - next up was Ruslan and John had some early trouble as this table was very fast and he over ran shape. Once, John got the hang of the speed he won but it was closer then it had to be...
Canadian time...Next up was Jason Klatt original from Manitoba now lives in Bloomington Illinois (how many times have these two played each other)... I thought that John had to be the favorite, but give Jason credit, he hung in there and made it a hill hill match...which John pulled out...
The final...Shane Van Bourne and John for all the marbles....(I sensed that the crowd was for John..has Shane won so much that the fans want a different winner..)
I thought John was the better player in this match but didn't win..
finally thoughts...it was great to ride John's coattails.....Rick and Walter thanks for sharing your time with me..(ps..Walter next meal is on me...) John played with a lot of imagination, heart and courage....better days are ahead after all he is only 25...
