A Portable 14.1 Scorekeeper

I’ve been looking for a scorekeeper that I can take to pool halls that don’t have any 14.1 scoring system such as beads.
The newer pool rooms don’t want overhead clutter, often have higher ceilings, and using coins doesn’t work for 14.1.

So I have been on the prowl for awhile to find a suitable scorekeeper other than the electronic version that are pricey.
Well, what I was looking for finally turned up on eBay and I quickly made an offer. It was accepted and arrived today.

What’ya think? IMO, this is as simple and functionally ideal as you could hope for. I wonder why there aren’t more of
this style available? I think this should be easy to build and relatively popular with pool players with home pool tables.

You could use combination locks that have the numbers running l to r that you have to rotate each number. Like the briefcase style case

Mind me asking what you paid?

$40.00 + shipping……the phone app for keeping score is used in APA and other pool leagues.
I wanted the nostalgia of manually keeping score and scoring beads aren’t used much as in the
past because of pool room designs. Older pool rooms still use beads but more modern designs,
like where I play, it just doesn’t fit in. So I wanted something that connected with how I grew up
playing pool and manually keeping score was the way I learned pool. I still enjoy racking pool
balls using a Delta Elite pool rack instead of a template. Racking balls is the way I learned to play.
I like doing it instead of laying a thin piece of plastic on the head spot. I guess I am just old school.

Nice. Since it's for straight pool, maybe add text as below. I always got confused which counter was for what anytime I used them for 14.1 instead of the overhead beads.

$10 on Scam-azon. Searched for flip numbers. I use an android app which I highly recommend "Straight Pool Sheet". Keeps a ton of stats and does everything and more for scoring.

I saw the flip scores but unless you want to flip the pages like at a grammar school volley ball game, it’s not for me.

One thing in particular is important. For 14.1, it doesn’t let you keep 2 scores…..the current rack score & total score.

You have to be able to balance the two scores for accurate score keeping. That’s why this design is reminiscent of
the older Gold Crown tables with a scorekeeper embedded in the table rail. You need to keep track of the current rack
and total match scores why is why this seems suitable for 14.1 score keeping. And it also looks pretty cool as well.

I like the suggestion but keep in mind after the running score goes above 15, it becomes self-evident what the scores
are. And since a player knows if they are winning or losing, it’s easy to recognize your score from your opponent’s. I
prefer the clean look without having to use a label maker. But the illustration you posted does look pretty cool with
the yellow labels. Thanks for the suggestion. It was a very good one and I just might do it if I made the same labels.
However, I’d reverse the labels so the 1st label is the current rack score followed by the 2nd label’s total match score.
To my eye, it seems more natural for the scores to be displayed from a left to right reading. I guess it’s style preference.

Lot of phone apps that do the trick. I usually put the APP on the iPad for the ball count, then use the conventional rack counter to count games won.

How about a hybrid....

Top part is 14 beads on a wire that start each rack in the middle of the wire. After each inning, the middle beads are moved to the side of that shooter. The bottom is two score wheels where the totals are kept.

Confusion often results since typically, the initial rack score location becomes the total, and the following rack goes on the opposite counter.

I’ve always wanted to make digital beads. A traditional string of beads with a numerical display of how many beads are on a players side. I play 14.1 and use beads instead of the counter.
