I've been keeping track of my action, table time and tournament entry fees since the first of the year. I wanted to get an idea of how much I was making/losing at this game. I'm a decent amateur player and I like to gamble, I am most comfortable at 10 or 20 a rack. January got off to a rough start and the bottom line was I lost about 340 for the month. February was much much better and I was a 700 winner for the month. March was an interesting month and I broke EVEN (I didn't like this because since I was keeping track I saw how much money I put in action to come up even!) May will be a good month because I'm going to snap the open division at the BCA 8 Ball in Vegas,well I'm going to give it my best shot at least!

A DEPRESSING IDEA, Do not do it.
I have been keeping a detailed record of all my gambling and tournaments for about 8 or 9 years. I started on paper, then went to computer text files, and finally to a computer spreadsheet. I track gambling and tournament entry fees, but I don't track table time or "tips" to the houseman or others, or travel expenses (not really applicable to me anyway).
Many of the people who know I do this think I'm anal about it. However, I feel it gives me an edge. I keep track of all the handicapping, the game, the table we played on, if there was any special occurance (arguments, money short, etc.).
Using this data I have noticed paterns for classes of players that I consistantly lose to. So now I avoid playing this group completly, unless my "gamble" gets the best of me.
I also keep track if the game and handicapping was in my favor, which isn't always reflected in who ended up winning (the luck factor, etc.)
I have a bunch of players in my book that consistantly lose money to me in small incriments. Because its a bit here and a bit there, they think we're about even, when infact my book tells me otherwise. Those "bits here and there" can add up to a few thousand over the course of a few years. I think that perhaps if these players knew how much they were actually down to me they might stop playing me. Then again, most of these consistant losers are idiots and nothing would stop them from donating.

I'll keep kind of a mental running total for each week. Expenses -vs- winnings. It's nice if I don't have to go to the bank for a week or two for spending money (because of winnings).
Further back than a week - I don't remember.
But I'm usually happy to win a little here and there to help with the expenses. (In my case, gas, drinks, entry fees.)

I kept tabs today thats about it. I didnt have alot on me only $125 and I paid my $20 tab $5 for pool plus a $10 tip to the waitress and I left with $145 so I guess I was up 20? If you count what I paid then I guess I won $55 yeah I know its tons of money!!! But not bad for $5 a game. and this was one pocket! yeah I know alot or work for $5 but what the hell!!

I used to track my blackjack play just like you do your pool playing. My friends thought me nuts, too. But I know what I've won, exactly. I tracked my pool gambling in the old days, but nowadays I only gamble with better players to get my game up when preparing for a tourney or something like that. So the losses are, to me, just a part of the cost of getting better.
I just love players who tell me that they "won" $x at the casino or pool table. When I ask them how much it cost them to "win" that much, they usually don't like my inquiries as it displays the true cost of their "wins." Most players seem to want to fool themselves into believing that they're better/luckier than they really are.
Numbers tell the true story.

lap dance or stick her tongue down your throat? (You must be young with all
those hormones raging) Did you have anther $1,000 in the other pocket you forgot to tell us about?
I deduct drinks, food, quarters for table if any, tournament fees if any, but I don't count gas unless nearly broke. (And I only drink Dr. Pepper out playing).

-How much am I making per hour - I think I spent 14 hours at an all day tournament and won $50. That's $3.57 per hour.
-Or how much does it cost me to play pool - One week I got in the money in almost every tournament I entered - played everyday. Small tournaments - $13 here $26 there, etc. So it did not cost me anything to play pool that week, actually came out ahead.

Man you should move to this town. Everyone here needs the nuts or they wont play. I play and pay on games that I shouldnt win, but sometimes do.
I only get better and learn when I play these tough games.
