A scammer has reared his ugly head!

I'm not saying this person wasn't trying to scam you but if you could have gotten his money first, and it sounded like you could, then where's the scam? I understand it's a scam if he wants you to front him the table before you get paid but I didn't interpret it that way. It just sounded to me like you could have gotten the money first and then send him the table and his balance. You would have known, if you couldn't cash the check, if the deal was no good.

The scam is in the fact that the check is NO GOOD. The scam artist sends you (Rick W) a cashier's check for $10,000 and wants you to 'keep' $5,000 for your item (a pool table you have for sale) and send THEM the $5,000 that's 'over the agreed amount for the item'. The bank cashes the check for $10,000, because they haven't discovered that it's 'bad' YET. You send the scammer the $5,000 and start boxing up the table for shipment. NOW,finally, the bank discovers the check is counterfeit and they want 'their' $10,000 back. You have to give it to them. You've already sent the scammer $5,000 and he ain't sending it back. You still have your table (which they probably didn't want to start with) and you have to come up with $5,000 out of YOUR own pocket to pay the bank back... hence: the word Scam..

Agree to cash the 10K check but don't. Deposit the check into your checking account and wait for the bank to tell you if it is good or not. If it's no good, you give the bank back their own money. If it's good, well, it wont be. But you will know that too.

My rule of thumb is - if it's too good to be true, watch out... it's probably a scam.

scam

I don't know if it was King or not but I read about some one who even asked the bank how long they would need to wait before they sent the money out. The bank teller said 2 day's and the guy waited 3 day's and sent it plus the merchandise. WEll then 2 day's after he sent it the bank told him it was no good and it was their cashier's check and it took them 3 day's to find out.

I sold a schon on E-bay and I kept getting e-mails from guys in Indonesia wanting to buy it for 600.00 but I needed to take their credit card. I told the guy I couldnt' take a credit card and suggested he go to his bank and buy a money order with his credit card and he said there was no bank near to do that. After that 2 or 3 guys tried the same thing and the price went to 800.00 for a schon r-1 from 1986. When the first guy offered 600.00 I was suspicious but when the others offered 800.00 I knew something was up.

So is there any amount of time or event occurence that you can wait for and know afterward that the check is legit?

Contact the purchaser's bank directly giving the bank the checking account number. The bank can then tell you if sufficient funds are in the account. But beware, the account holder can later on put a stop payment on the check.

I've had a bank tell me a local business check was good, checked my balance a few days later at an atm, then waited a few more days and started writing checks against it. Things started bouncing like a Pam Anderson work out video. Good thing I saved my atm print out, they reimbursed any fees. You should really wait at least a week until the bank has their money in hand before counting it as good. I had a check a few years ago for a good amount of money take 2 weeks to clear.

Yeah Rick.............He wants you to send his difference in a Western Union Transfer as soon as possible. Thus before the bank realizes it..........So what your getting scammed out of is what you wire the guy..........He has no intentions of getting the table. He just tries to pass of the fake check, and hopefully get you to send the wire when your bank first says it is good......before it gets caught! As stated above.....if it sounds too good to be true........IT IS! I mean it sounds fishy from the start.......he doesn't know me at all, yet he is gonna send me an 8,000 dollar casheirs check! And hope that I send him anything! Much less the difference!

I get it PTM. I was thinking along the same lines as Hemi in his post above. Make damn sure the check is good before you send him his balance and/or the table.

Originally posted by pooltablemech :As regards payment, this is what I am going to do, I have an Agent (Agent's Company) in the US who owes me $6,800 I would instruct him to make out a cheque to you in that amount and as soon as you clear your bank, you can let me have my balance via western union money transfer. The reason why I ma doing this is because if I decide to send payment from over here it might take a long time before it goes through, but a check sent from over there within US would clear between 2 and 3 days. <snipped>END QUOTE

This is how it seems to me. He hacks into this other guys account. The check goes to you. When the check gets traced, it is traced to you, you are left holding 'the bag' and he goes scott free with the goods.
