A small tale

I was practicing straights at a place that i dont usually go to yesterday and was making small progress and i started going haywire, missing left and right, no matter what.
This has happened to me 3 days this far this week. I was going nuts trying to figure what i was doing wrong and it was really getting to me, i was trying to analyze everything and nothing i did came out right.

So anyway, this fellow was playing next to me asked me if he could make an observation and i said, please by all means, do. So he showed me that i was punching the ball instead of following through smoothly, he got down and showed me what i was doing and what i should be doing and then showed me a small straight in drill and it hit me like an electric shock. He said to me, now you got it, after about 5 shots.

I said to him its almost impossible for me to pick that up as i cant see what im doing and he agreed but said to always, ALWAYS, go through the ball and make it habit.
He said thats why im steering the ball as im not going straight through and im always missing to the long side of the rail. And for the rest of the 4 hours i was there i didnt miss a ball to the long side of the rail and i started running my 15,s 20,s and whatnot.
All this time it never hit me that i was punching the ball, but he showed me and it made total sense, its just amazing how i couldnt pick it up.

My runs came to ends when i was falling out of position and had to go for miracle shots to try to get back in position and it would get worse, lol.
He also told me i was practicing the hardest game of all as its not like 9 ball where you have that wide margin of position to fall in, you have a 3-4 inch position area if youre lucky and if you fall out line, you probably end out of line for the rest of your run unless you correct it right away.

Anyway, i guess my main point is a lot of guys come on here and in the main forum asking what theyre doing wrong and how do i improve. The main thing is to have someone who knows what theyre looking at to correct you, all the advice online is only good for so much but they cant see what youre doing wrong as you, yourself cant see it either. I myself did post a question a year ago as to why i was breaking down and no one could put their finger on it, because they couldnt see what i was doing.

Its frustrating when you cant figure it out and i got doubly lucky by going to a new place and finding someone who could analyze what i was doing wrong and was generous enough to share some knowledge with me.

Sorry if this sounded like a rant but i figure its the least i can do is pass along something to someone who is having problems with their game and loves straights as much as i do.
JUST ALWAYS FOLLOW THROUGH ON EVERYTHING AND STAY DOWN !
Tomorrow i will go out and run 50 !! I hope, lol.

You are fortunate to have that chance meeting.
Good for you for listening, and following some good advice.

Dinking balls around is a easy habit to get into. It is a habit that is simple to get
over once you are aware of it!

Mosconi played on heavy cloth with inferior balls,I think this helped his game as
he wasn't afraid to stroke anything. No dinking the balls to not over run position.
Yes he had a great stroke and could probably play even better on todays equipment.

Keep playing.Keep striving to get better.

Nice story. Thanks for sharing. Glad for your positive experience.

Thanks for sharing. I go throught the same stuff every now and then where I punch stroke and lose concentration. Good tip.
