A thought on 9 vs 7 foot tables.

I'm sure many threads have been written on the differences in table size. The conventional wisdom says that the larger tables are more difficult to play on. Some have questioned the validity of Willie Mosconi's 500+ run in straight pool due to the fact that it was done on an 8 foot table. I have played on tables of all sizes and though it may seem counterintuitive I play better on 9 foot tables as opposed to bar boxs. Although the bar box offers shorter shots I find that position play is more difficult. On the big table there is simply more room to work with when attempting to gain position. I also find that there tends to be less obstructions due to the fact that the rack has more space to scatter. I consider myself a good distance shooter so the lenght of the shots do not effect my ability to run balls. I was wandering if anyone else had a similar viewpoint or am I completely off base.

My experience with bar boxes is the condition of the equipment. The huge cue ball (wighted or oversized or magnetic) plays diffently than the red circle or other similar 2¼ cue ball that come with the better sets of balls that are used in real pool rooms. Then there is the cloth and constant wear by ball bangers. Usually there is amature maintenance on these tables with little regard to level or correct cloth installation.

Some of the better bars that have tables use top notch equipment and the tables are serviced by professionals. But, sadly, IMO, this is not the norm.

There has been an upgrade to bar boxes that hasn't taken off, but hopefully it will soon. The Diamond 7 foot table uses Simonis and also the red circle cue ball. This setup is great for players of both 9, 8 and 7 foot table. I think it will make the playing ground more equal.

I share your viewpoint on this subject. After you tune into the larger tables, I prefer them.

On a barbox, you need to know more about playing into clusters. Breaking out balls and playing off of balls for shape.
