A tourney format for D/fw area players???

I've been thinking lately that with as many Az'ers as there are here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area that we all ought to try to get together some weekend for a friendly tournament. My thinking here is that if we could get at least 16 players we could have a pretty nice little tourney that could get the winner a little pocket money and we could all have a good time with it. Kind of a "meet-and-greet" deal. Here is the format I came up with: With 16 players, we would draw the matchups out of a hat (or one of those bottles with the numbered balls). To play in the first round, each player would put up $20 against his opponents $20. The winner of any round gets his opponents money and adds his own to it. The winners would take the $40 they have after winning the first round, add $10 and play the second round. The winners of the second round would take the $100 they have after they win, add $25 to it and play the semifinals. The two semifinal winners would then put their $250 winnings they have thus far into an aggregate pot that pays $350 to the winner and $150 to second place. I figured this was the best way for the lesser skilled players (like myself that would get SMOKED in the first round) to participate, have a good time and not have to lose too much money. Of course these recommendations may need a little tweaking, depending on how many players we could get to commit to a particular date, and how much money some players are willing to lose. What does all the D/FW'ers out there think about this? Is it a do-able thing or not worth an effort? Just think of the braggin' rights the winner would have on the board here, eh?

I like the sound of that, although whether I could make it could be a different matter. Keep plugging away though & let's see what happens.

You would think that an area the size of the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex would have a lot of tournaments going on- and there are some half a dozen tournaments going on that end up paying the winners anywhere from $20-50 every week. Those tournaments only succeed because good players, in most cases dont show up to win it every week and most of the players in it, all play the same speed. What kills a tournament worth any money lately, is having David G, Lizard, Barry Emmerson, or some of the top notch players show up (which is their right in an open tournament) and killing all the action. I have noticed that a tournament would be announced and instead of getting 30 players who all play about the same speed, a few good players show up because the money is worth it and everyone else decides to gamble on some one pocket and not enter because they have no chance of winning. So a thirty player tournament ends up with 10 good players and a few who dont mind feeding the kitty. Discretionary income (money that you can just throw away every weekend seems to be dwindling) is used to match up for some one pocket or other game where the player has a chance of at least breaking even. The Dallas area is ripe for a big tournament- but the chances of getting a big turn out seems bleak. Who knows if your idea has merit. Just getting 25 players to commit without everyone surveying the competitors beforehand seems difficult. Bar those good players from entering and you might have a successful tournament but bad feelings emerge. Then there is the problem of getting someone to commit their pool room to a bunch of coke drinkers for a tournament ......... am I negative about all of this or what????

LOL. One thing I'll never be called is a coke drinker. Can't do that when I'm playing.

Sounds like Maniac needs some X-mas funds! :D

Just kidding!

I dont think the format is bad but not too many lower rated players are going to want to put up $20 for one match in a blind draw.

The concept is not bad however. I do some APA events and I might try this approach. With the set handicaps it would be easy to put people into brackets with like opponnets.
After rethinking it I decided I really like it for an APA tourney. I might lower the intial thus lowering the end but APA players are usually into playing and not the final payday.

Adding to this ... maybe a first round for $10-20 bucks and then the player
keeps part of the winnings until the end.
For a 16 player field at $20 a pop the winner would get $160 and the loser $60 if done in $10 increments.
Losers of round 1 get zero
Losers of round 2 get $10 or it could go towards a losers side bracket
Losers of round 3 get $30
Loser of the final round get $60

My thought is that the location could add some $$ or some type of discount or bar tab or something to help with the finds. I think
league players might find this more attractive than large tournaments with little or no chance of getting into a paying spot.
It also could work out for some host locations that might only draw 8 or so for a tournament. Any bar or pool room with 8 could start one. I am not sure how it would work with byes.

sounds good to me

what would the race be to? I also think the open level players need to be barred from the tourney to get a better turnout even though I do like to play against them to toughen me up.

Noooo

:p Don't bar, give weight,C- players could match up that way. It's not how good you play it's how you match up that gets the Cheese. Then the field would be fair to all!!!

Why not play a 16 player (or more) double elimination tournament with a $20 entry fee? Especially if it were more of a "meet and greet" versus an attempt to make money off lower skilled players?

Another good idea. I'm really liking the sound of this.

Anything along these lines is fine with me. I'm just trying to get a bunch of Az'ers together for an afternoon/evening of pool shootin' (the afternoon table rates are WAY lower) and a good time. And....if anyone wants to take the ball and run with it, please do. I'm basically a natural-born follower (not a leader). I'm one of those that when someone points a finger, that's where I go. With my own table at home, I no longer have a close relationship with any poolhall/houseman that I may need to help pull this off. But I was thinking that we would at the very least need a house with at least 12-16 tables and a bar. My first thought was to use Rusty's in Arlington as it is a central location for the Metroplex, but there are also good choices in the H-E-B area. Does someone wanna try to get this together? If not, I'll give it a stab, but it may be a few weeks 'til I have more info.

Also my thinking on the entry fees was that for a $20 first round fee, that the lower skilled players were probably be eliminated in that round anyway. Then the higher skilled players would be upping the ante for a decent size pot to make it worth their while. I don't mind dropping $20 to get to shoot a set and meet all of y'all. Unless someone spots me a ton, I'm gonna give someone a very short set. I figure it this way, I'm gonna spend more money at the bar than I am on shooting pool!!!
Thanks to all those showing interest so far!

I would gladly part with $20 to get the chance to meet a lot of the members. Definitely be better to go after this post-Holiday after everything settles down, and we all get back into our normal routines.

I agree with that! I get all "partied-out" this time of the year.
