This was such a holiday treat to stumble upon in YT. Feel 40 years younger watching and listening to her background expressed in that listen-all-day lovely accent, which has now become a musical, charming blend of several spoken-English accents due to her many years of contacts with players and promoters from so many pool-loving countries.

Such a pleasant, articulate lady who has fairly ref-ed so many exciting pool and snooker matches for quite a number of years.

Don't let her hear you say she sounds English. She's from Scotland. ;) And yes she is awesome. Can play some too.

Every longtime pool fan knows she's originally from Scotland. Point was the brogue's become markedly thinner, lilting Gaelic/Celtic inflection even more musical, and the pronunciation now distinctly a blend of a variety of English regions' pronunciations and further modified by contact with so many expertly Anglo-phonic players from the Netherlands, Germany, and every Nordic country. I spotted no trace of Americanisms in any of her words, but others may.

Oh, for a photo of that gallant, chivalrous, apologetic Earl with his arm extended to hand her the bouquet of flowers. Love the image of it in my mind, and the related story. So classy when he allows himself to be.

Great video. Michaela was an outstanding referee who knew how to maintain decorum in the pool arena more so than the referees that have succeeded her at Matchroom. This interview, done when she re-emerged as head referee for Darren Appleton's World Pool Series a few years ago, is a good one.

She was a nice lady, too. I met her during the cocktail hour leading up to the 2013 BCA Hall of Fame dinner at the Mirage in Las Vegas, We chatted for less than five minutes, but she was very congenial. The next time I saw her was at a World Pool Series event a few years later in New York City and she approached me, admitting that she couldn't remember my name but recalled that we had met on the night of Barry Hearn's BCA Hall of Fame induction.

Michaela was not only very good at her job, but she brought a special elegance to any event she worked.

I doubt EVERY long-time pool fan could tell you she was from Scotland. They're gonna say British or POSSIBLY narrow it down to England. You're giving pool fans WAAAAY too much credit. ;)

Here's the exact point at which disruptive tension broke out between Earl and ref, Michaela.

Someone in the one-sided crowd is verbally provoking Earl at the 2003 World 9-ball Championship in Cardiff, Wales. The mic easily picks up Earl's understandably angry, obscene reply to the guy. Michaela instructs Earl not to talk anymore while Steve is at the table -- as he had been doing -- then lectures him further, and you can see her facial reaction when Earl snarls back: "Shut up."

This is what his next-day flowers of apology were for. Note that Steve very wisely opts to immediately halt play by taking a brief break to hopefully allow the atmosphere to become calmer. You'll see that the commentators worked the unfolding drama for all it was worth, for about 4 or 5 more minutes.
