after splitting sets, they're on their tie breaker. first two sets were races to 7. tie breaker is a race to 5. as we all know, earl hasn't had a lot of luck with races to 5 (see thread on george rodriguez and joey "k").

earl is on his best behavior. he hasn't talked to (many) invisible people yet. he only argued or heckled one or two of the spectators. he's playing pretty good pool. but so is tony.

tony seems annoyed but complacent. for tony, winning or losing is not a concern. for earl, still trying to find himself (and possibly a sponsor or two), winning is everything.

tony is up 4-2. earl is racking. will tony win this last game in the tie breaker set?

earl lucks in the nine! earl lucks in the nine!

(ok, so he played a good carom <g>)

score 4-3.

earl is losing it! he's yelling at a spectator. a fan (i guess). "jesus christ, every time you're telling me what happened...i KNOW what happened...i don't need you telling me what happened". don't ask.

tony fires in a fantastic full table length bank! the crowd responds. but on his next inning, he scratches. oy!

earl runs the final rack. it wasn't pretty but he did it. the pearl beat the silent assasin. bummer. now they'll each play five audience members.

earl at blaze tour

this is true....if anyone was at Leisure Time last sunday for the Blaze stop.....you would have died laughing at the things earl was saying....I couldn't even tell you all of them, he was pissed off Liz Ford was beating him.....then he lost to Mike Fingers....It was distracting while i was playing my match which i was up 4-0, & ended up losing 7-4, but at the same time I could not stop laughing.... I don't think anyone was clapping for him & he was getting really angry at that....

was anyone else there?

I was actually standing in between the two fans that got under his skin. I was right behind Earl. The first was a lady who was constantly commenting on how great Tony was, with a velvet stroke and how Earl had no chance. Earl snapped "Do you have to comment on how great my opponent is on every shot right in my ear". She said "I thought this was America!" Later she said to Earl "can I cough now, I have been holding it for 2 hours!" Now get this, she was carrying a cue case. However, when someone commented "It's Hill Hill" she turned to me and said "What does that mean?" When Tony scratched someone said "That's it, it's over" She said "NO NO it can't be, he can't win"

The second was a guy talking to his friend. When Tony would miss or play a safety he would say things like "It's ok, Earl doesn't have a shot" or "He left Earl long and straight, he can't get out from here"

I THINK (I am not sure!!) That Tony was annoyed at the break shot. Before the match Earl suggested that they break from the box to "Slow things down a bit" Tony agreed. That break WAS NOT Tonys friend. He lost the first set 7-3. After coming up dry on the third break in the second set, he turned to Larry and said "I am not breaking from there anymore" After that you saw a much more "focused" Tony. The second set went hill-hill with Tony snapping in the 9 ON THE BREAK.

After the match both players were in good moods and enjoyed playing a handful of spectators one rack.

Just to add that Earl won the first set, Tony broke the 9 in to win the second set (both race to 7). And they did the final set (race to 5)

Earl missed some shots (including one shot on the 9) and had few balls pop out on him. He did start talking a bit from the third game on, however it really isn't too bad at all. He made a few great one pocket style banks though (not sure if this is a good compliment to a 9 ball player)

In the beginning, Tony's CB flew off the table or scratched in the side a few times. Although he didn't win, he showed great sportmanship.

Here are a few shots Tony did:

1, In one game he played a great counter safety by two rail kicking the 2 ball and freezing the CB to the 5

2, He did shots like this a few times, always parked the CB on a dime after several rails

3, There was one shot on the 9 Tony used way too much force and the CB scratched into the side. It really confused me

4, On the hill-hill game he missed hitting a ball on a safety and gave Earl the game

Thanks to Greg of Amsterdam Billiards for putting this together.

It's too bad Earl is having mental problems..i'm wondering if he is on any so called anti-depressant meds that is causing his condition to worsen...i saw Tony play at a Tourny earlier this year..if he has not been sponsored by now this is a great opportunity for a major company to sponsor a great pool player and a wonderful human being..:)

Didn't you read were it was said he wasn't bad tonight?

Seems like Earl was really on his best behavior and the two partisan dimwits weren't ! the woman probably brought a cuecase to make her appear knowledgeable or just recently bought it to start educating herself on playing pool. however, the most important thing that she should first learn and understand is pool ethics and how to contain herself in the first place, since what she was doing was obviously sharking. dunno, probably she made a bet on Tony winning. but still, not justifiable.

about the other dude, well he's just against Earl.

A few photos of the event

I have uploaded some photos from their matches here:

The woman kept on saying how great Tony was and Earl stood no chance in that match. I know she's entitled to her opinion, but to repeat it over and over again is just plain pissing somebody off. heck, I could throw a bottle of beer in the middle of the table and would justify my actions by saying this is America. don't you just think it's a shallow excuse for such bad behavior? I don't tolerate Earl's wrongdoings nor do I tolerate unethical spectators that cause players to lose their mind. jeer Earl when he deserves it if he's the one who started a scene. but to instigate jeering just to piss him off is plain ego-tripping !

earl would be doing himself a favor by hanging his cue for a few years while he seeks help. he's becoming a joke to a lot of people.

If Earl was to hang up his cue at this point, it would not be for a few years. It would be for good!! And the pool world would have lost a LIVING LEGEND. Earl is still a threat to win ANY major tournament. It was only two years ago at the US Open, that on the final day there were 4 Pinos left...AND EARL!

And to the "lot of people" that Earl has become a joke to.....COULD THEY BEAT HIM?? Do ANY pros consider Earl a joke? I saw Thorsten nearly bow down to him at the event with Robles
