About Your Hypnotism

Hello Sarah, I've always thought that when you are down on a shot, you seem to be one of the most intense and focused playes around. Back in 2004 you mentioned in a thread that you underwent hypnotism to improve your mental game.

At this point, looking back, do you think it was beneficial to your playing? Did it stay with you? Have you had subsequent sessions? Or, would you not recommend it? Just wondering if you could elaborate on the whole subject, because I'm about to try it and I would imagine others have also considered it.

Good luck in 2007!

That was offered in Greensboro,N.C. one time. I went up there and gave it a try. It actually works but the only downfall is when either i or my opponent makes the 9 on the snap. I cluck like a chicken. LOL!!!=)) I know you didnt want to hear that but i couldnt resist. lol=))

I underwent hypnosis in an effort to calm myself before a tournament and it worked well. I became calm, alert, and ready to play when my first match started. However, as the tourney went along, the effects wore off.

The power of the mind is amazing and you can do some amazing things with hypnosis... however, it won't make you a better player... you may play better because you can retain calm and focus.

I do realize it won't actually improve my playing skills, I believe my playing skills are adequate. The problem I have is that sometimes in a big tournament with a crowded room, close tables, and the occasional punk kid opponent, I lose focus and start playing like an amateur. It's like my subconsious has a self-destruct wish. Reminds me of Earl when he starts to lose. Mentally, he goes down hill fast and just gets worse and worse. I wonder if he's tried hypnosis?

Tim,

I was hypnotized a number of years ago. I think I was about 14 and I did it again when I was about 19. It was with a sports psychologist. It is mostly to help you calm your nerves and stay focused. Along with the hypnosis he taught me how to meditate and breathe properly. That part of it stuck with me. The hypnosis does wear off after some time but you get used to the feeling of going into matches calm so it becomes more natural. It also helped me to not clam up when the match would get close and not get down on myself if I was losing.

A book that I read recently kind of preached the same stuff minus the hypnosis. It was called Body, Mind Mastery. I found it in the sports section at Borders. It was an easy read that gave little exercises and examples to help understand things. I noticed a difference right away.

Thanks for the reply. Since I first posted the question, I have undergone the Hypnotherapy. It does seem to help with the relaxation issues.

I've seen you play in person many times, and look forward to actually meeting you sometime. Good luck this year, hope to see you on the TV table!

I think I know a guy who used the same hypnotist. In a big match he would always lay an egg.
