Was he jealous? Is he bitter? Or is he the biggest supporter of Team USA in the entire country? Mark Cantrill speaks with the American pro Johnny Archer about his take on the Mosconi Cup this year.

Mary Ann speaks with women's pool legend Billie Billing about her epic pool hall in Brooklyn.

Listen tonight at 9:10 CST

Itsfroze - Johnny said they had momentum going into day 3, not day 4. They had won the last match of day 2, and so had kept it close.

On who Johnny would replace, I guess objectively you have to get rid of the player with the worst record - Shane!

My heart pretty much 100% disagrees with you, but my brain pretty much 100% agrees!

I think it was huge success, hope that mark has chance to do it again this year. He suggested that there might be more candidates this year. I hope Johnny is in the pool he has the game. Just got to avoid pool politics and play pool like it was his rookie year. I can't wait I hope they go with 12 . let the competition begin. Go USA.

Talk about a plot twist......man-o-man.

This, and a new euro coach....

it WILL be interesting this year that's for sure...

A few breaks and...

A few less dry breaks, a couple of shots not missed, and the USA team is sitting at the end of Day Three only one game down, instead of being way behind at the start of the official Day Four matches.

Team USA made a fine showing despite some poor shot selection and some unusual misses by normally near-perfect shotmakers.

As the underdog they had a lot to prove, and I think they showed that the USA is now competitive again on the world scene, and will not be run over easily in the future.

As for complaining about John Schmidt, he won his first match so he got out of the gate well. Plus, wasn't everyone saying the Europeans were fielding second-stringers, and guys were complaining that described JS, so it should have all evened itself out.

Johnny pinpointed Match 11 Boyes/Niko - Schmidt/Hall as the turning point. USA was close behind by 2 points then after Shane &partner turned around last match of previous nite and momentum with USA
You are a very brave man to say Shane should be replaced -
I agree and Johnny is a good replacement . :)

Mark has not received confirmation that he will return as captain
If he returns I can see why picking Johnny may be tricky to manage for Mark seeing that Johnny was ex captain and is an unofficial leader of the players

Yep Johnny has to present himself as a player only, he is already a champion an professional player. But the leadership he has not really stood out as great. He is to close to the players has to much personal interest. He a good spokesman for pool I just think you can't be both. At the table monster leader in the pool world average . maybe in time he will be a great leader. I think that Mark Wilson is the team coach for at least 4 more years he came out under extraordinary circumstances and showed vision , and demonstrated great leadership with team USA we lost but team USA look like winners. With all the problems with organized pool Mark's execution of his vision was flawless. He deserves credit and hope the other leaders take notes. I think he set a new standard for team USA that will go on with or without Mark. But I think this guy has way more to bring to the table. The players should see that and get behind him and this new standard for there own benifit . I learned a lot this year following the team about leadership and management under extreme opposition in a hostile environment under pressure. John S said that if we had the fan support that Europe had it could change everything. I think from a fans point of view we got the coach now we need players that want and will play for him with all there heart. The fans will be there. If I was a pro I would say put me in the pool I'm gonna have the best year ever I want to be on your team. If I don't get on I'll work harder next year. Win win get expossure have something to work for. And get to be part of something big . American pool is about to go nuts.

I have been hearing this quite a bit recently. Although Shane is the great American hope and probably the best player in the country his record at the Mosconi Cup isn't that great, maybe its just not a format that works well with his game. Maybe it is time to realize that and as unpopular as the decision would be Shane does not help the team. Replace him.

A good question might be, how does Shane feel about it?

If he doesn't like the format and doesn't care for the event, then yeah, I can see it making sense to ditch him for lack of motivation to overcome whatever is holding him back.

However, the simple fact is, he's a frickin lights-out phenom when it comes to 9ball, and he's proven it again and again. If he really truly wants to be there, and wants to win it as much as anyone, it would be nuts to turn him down.

I was asked earlier today - what would a Navy Seal do in this situation?
Walk away and concede that the pressure/format/crowd/venue/ was simply too much for me? Or adapt and overcome ?

There was something about the MC this year that I noticed while watching the mathces. John Schmidt mentioned it in his interview last week. And it's not something I see people mention too much when talking about MC performances.

That something is this: No American pool player ever plays in the Blackpool environment. That is, the screaming and howling and general pandemonium between shots. Not only that, but American players never play in front of so many people at once. JS mentioned that with every miss you had people yelling at you and insulting you, etc. Athletes in other sports deal with it constantly, but with pool, tournaments are silent with some applause here and there.

It's probably safe to say that the Europeans never play in that environnment either, BUT when the yelling and howling is supporting you, it's much easier to deal with.

So next year, we need really loud fans in Vegas to make the Euros cry and the US team should practice with a full room of drunk, belligerent fans screaming at them.

Regarding the notion that we need rowdy fans in Vegas to give us an edge: I blame plate tectonics for why we are losing. Stay with me:

1) North America and Europe have been drifting apart for millions of years

2) Matchroom waited to start the event until Las Vegas and England were 8 timezones apart

3) To show the event live in both continents, it only makes sense to start the event at night when in England. So all the fans are blitz drunk and rowdy.

4) For the same reason, the event starts in early afternoon when in Las Vegas. The fans are just waking up from late night sessions at the Craps table and are quietly sipping coffee.

5) Therefore because of Continental Drift, we are in deep trouble.
