Accufast cushions question

Hi all,
I have a question about the accufast cushions and when do they go bad? Some of you know I'm in the market for a pool table. I've looked at a lot now but it seems when you ask someone how much the table has been played on, everyone is like "oh hardly ever." I think that's the answer they think you want to hear maybe? Anyway can you give me some criteria for judging when rails are too old without actually seeing the table and feeling the rubber? Some of these tables are 5-10 years old.
 
I wouldn't think a home table would be used and abused as much as a bar table. 5-10 years doesn't seem like that much time to this untrained internet warrior. PM RealKingCobra. He knows his stuff forward and backward.

I just remember hearing that rails tend to go bad if they are left unplayed. Something about playing on them regularly helps to condition the rubber. That's why I was concerned about people who says "it's hardly ever used."
 
As someone who has sold tables for a living, done mechanic work(not at the level of the top guys, but not awful), and played for my meals, I can tell you that most of the tables people put in their homes really don't get that much play, and most cushions should last a good long time. As a Brunswick/Diamond guy, I will tell you that accu-fasts go bad as soon as they are made(sorry , couldn't resist;)) In all honesty, I really personally prefer the Superspeed or Artemis over them. having said that, it really is personal opinion, and I hope that you are happy with whatever your choice may be!

I have never heard of ANY accufast cushions going bad. Just a little to lively for my taste. I would have to agree that most furniture style home tables don't receive much play.
 
I have an old victor table made in 1971 and was used in triple triangle pool room in richmond va till i bought it in 1995. Its origional rails are still in good shape after 38 years. I have found that the hardest thing on a pool table is humidity.

Ok, im still confused...
Which table will have better quality cushions? A table that has not been played much in the past 5 years, or a table that has been played for an hour a day for 5 years?

(according to the local pool shop a table that is not being played will need the cushions replaced quicker than one that is played often)

What are your thoughts?

I would prefer the table that was played on for an hour a day for 5 years. If someone is playing on it daily, the room must have some kind of climate control.

I would have to say that humidity plays one of the biggest roles in a tables cushions going bad. When I picture the table that hasn't been played on in 5 years, I see a furniture style 8' in a basement that has the lights off for 75% of the day and is damp.

I would NEVER purchase a pool table other than a Brunswick Gold Crown or a Diamond Pro or Pro Am / Smart Table.

How can that be? Accufast is pure gum rubber. Superspeed has cheap mix added in. Artemis lasts years if not a decade easily from what I've heard from Ernesto.
Problem with Accufast is they are not really a conventional K-66. No canvas on top and are flat back.

If I had a nickel everytime I've heard this one since I've been a member here for the past 4 days, i could probably retire. You guys even find a way to sneak it in to a post about cushion longevity! Just giving you a hard time, i know they're good tables, but im a novice on budget looking for a table with more style (we're just not fans of the look of a GC, too much like a bar table, sorry to offend). Anyway, sorry for sidetracking my own post, back to the topic.

Sorry to keep side tracking, but you did say you were in the market for a table.
I used to think the Brunswick Centennial was the ugliest table around.
Now, I would do things people would only do for a million dollars for one.

Some day your "novice" status will go away. Along with this, is the appreciation of a good table. Your table will then become one of the "hasn't been played on for 5 years" because it's a pile. There is a reason you have heard Brunswick and Diamond over and over = They are the best!!!!!!!!!! Get one:wink:

Best American table - Diamond
Best European table - Gabriels

Both buy cushions rather than use an in house product.
They are able to buy the best.

Both use Artemis cushions, made in Germany, should last for decades.

If you seach around here you will find horror stories of inferior rubber aging inconsistently (and quickly). Much of the stuff now comes from China where a brand means nothing.

If you are buying a table and can play on it first, you can judge whether or not the cushions are satisfactory, but you cannot tell how long they will stay that way.

If you are buying a disassembled table, assume that you will have to replace the cushions (and cloth). Perhaps you will be pleasantly surprised.
